KB3073930 will not hide Nvidia driver update

I pride myself in researching and figure things out but just can't get this one.
I know I have the most recent NVidia driver from their website. My video is gone.
I also know all about the show/hide "troubleshooter" (should be called fix a bad MS decision shooter)...anyway, it works fine with several items. However the Nvidia driver update does not show on the list of items in the troubleshooter it can hide!
So, it keeps showing up with the updates that I DO WANT to download.

Even stranger, some updates showed in the troubleshooter that were not showing in my windows update dialog.

But anyway, the real issue is that I need to hide that Nvidia driver. Any suggestions?

This is a little crazy. I might be okay with OS updates being pushed more but NOT drivers.

    Thanks,

    :)

  2. Preventing installation of problematic Nvidia video driver when installing Windows 10 Insider Preview 14342

    Hello,

I am transitioning from Windows 10.0 Build 10240 to Windows 10 Insider Preview 14342

I have problems with an Nvidia driver (when activated, it causes startup BSODs). So, I am attempting to prevent its re-installation (after I delete it).

I find that there is a conflict between what Windows Update says and what the KB3073930 hide/unhide tool says. Despite using "hide" to try "hide" (i.e. prevent re-installation) the Nvidia driver, Windows Update still tells me it wants to install the Nvidia
driver (this also happens after a computer restart).

I simply want to guarantee that the problematic Nvidia driver will never be installed again (I am using a laptop where its Intel video driver works but the Nvidia driver causes a BSOD).

My question is : despite using the tool KB3073930 to try "hide" (i.e. prevent future driver installations) the problematic Nvidia driver, will the installation process for Windows 10 Insider Preview 14342 look at the hardware as a "new installation" and
then try re-install the problematic Nvidia driver?

Is there some other way to solve the problem and prevent Windows 10 from trying to install the problematic Nvidia driver?

    Best regards,

    Stephen

    Yes.

You will also want to block 1709

HIDE / BLOCK WIN AND DRIVER UPDATES- KB3073930

Microsoft has released KB3073930 that will let users block or hide Windows or driver updates.

    @BJB

What is your update scheme, did you turn off Auto Update? See my settings below:

When Windows Update alerts me that there are updates avaliable, I select carefully what updates to install. When a MicroSoft WDDM NVIDIA driver is presented, I hide it.

If you have already download the latest official driver from nVidia, there is nothing newer in Windows Update, and this explains why you cannot see the driver update. The show/hide tool shows only available updates. The available nVidia driver is probably older than the one you have currently installed, so it will not normally install, and hence it will not shown in the list to hide it.

    Are you running Windows 10?
Those Windows Update settings (being able to choose "let me choose to download and install them") are not available in Windows 10 - a very common complaint/annoyance.

If you are running 10 and can choose those settings, PLEASE let me know how you accomplished that.

Thanks for all the help group. Yes I am on windows 10, that is the issue. Been working on setting up a newly built PC on W10 all day.
That hide tool does not work for drivers, at least not my Nvidia ones. The solution is you go to devices and printers and turn off the ability to "download drivers and realistic icons". It then disappeared from the updates list. That was the issue....in windows 10 you can't hide. Then the hide troubleshooter would not hide the NVidia driver. What a pain... Hope this helps someone.

And kind of spooky...I guess before I did that, it sniffed the network connection and at sometime downloaded some nonsense devices/drivers for my printers in the house that are wireless. Did not even ask. When I downloaded the right drivers, I had to delete that before they worked. And one printer still has issues....

As said before, if you already have latest drivers, there is nothing newer in Windows Update to download. The show/hide tool lists the NEW available updates. If the nVidia driver on Microsoft server is OLDER than the driver currently installed, then obviously it is not available as an update because it is older, so you should not see it in the list to hide it. If after some days a new driver is released, then it will be available in the list, unless you install the same version of something even newer directly from nVidia.

In other words, if you keep your nVidia drivers updated, you don't have to worry about them being replaced by Windows Update. The show/hide tool is useful for older nVidia cards that do not have any newer official driver, so we use it to hide any non-working "newer" Microsoft driver.

[Off-topic perhaps] The FIRST thing I do after installing - in my case still Win 8.1 (sorry for not mentioning that in my post) *Redface - is to shut down the auto-update feature. Unfortunately Windows 8.1 does not check for the newest NVidia 'WebDrivers" and if auto update in enabled, it will FORCE update it's own "ancient" WDDM drivers, leaving your graphics system in a terrible state. Tonight I will install Windows_10_nl-NL_1151_10586 (language ENG, US keyboard) in a Virtual Machine to check the state of this build and version. @TV2 I'll check the settings for auto-update for video drivers and will report back here.

Trust me - I have tried everything to try and get that basic functionality (let me choose) from Windows 10. There is no way that I know of to do it (and I am not a newb). The only choice available is to choose when to restart the computer to finish installing the updates.

What I have to do is go into Services and disable Windows Update. Then when I choose to update Windows I go back in and re-enable it.

And even though I have the option checked to not download drivers from Windows Update, I still got a Touchpad driver downloaded and installed Sunday night. No way to opt out of that driver without stopping all updates.
You have to let it install and then go in and manually uninstall it, then roll back the driver.

This is areal step back for MS. They are treating all users like children.

    Thanks for your response @TV2.

Sounds - by your chosen words - like this may be the 'System Integrity Protection' -adventure Apple stepped into with OS X El 'messy' Capitan, they are both driving us into the wrong direction of an one way driveway. Collisions are up ahead for sure.

I just got my Windows_10_nl-NL_1151_10586 (language ENG, US keyboard) installed in a VM. Installed my ESET Smart Security immediately after finishing installing Win10 for reviewing the generated network traffic. Tomorrow I'll be tweaking some more.

KB3073930 will not hide Nvidia driver update

I am on windows 10. Fully updated. Sorry, should have clarified that if I didn't or posted in wrong area.

    spapakons,
Yes you are correct. I have the most recent driver. This is why I do not understand why it WAS presenting another one in windows update. I was not trying to get it TO show, I was trying to get it to STOP. Here is what I did.

Go to "Devices and Printers" in control panel.
Right click your computer name under devices. Choose "Device installation settings". It will say "do you want windows to download driver software and realistic icons for your devices?".... choose "no let me choose what to do" and "never install driver software from windows update".

Only then did windows update STOP presenting the NVIDIA driver I did not want to install. Which it should not have been listing anyway.

As listed, in order to install the updates I wanted, it would have also installed that driver. As soon as I did this, the driver disappeared from the list of updates.

    I hope that made sense....

I apologize for the confusion I seem to have created, after I posted my Win8.1 screens about the auto auto settings!

Never thought that an UPGRADE would be such a downgrade in features that were so much a benefit for users!

I'll follow your directions for this auto update thingy! Thanks

    Cheers

That is all you have to do really, BJB ("never install driver software from windows update").
So is your issue solved now, or is there something else?
