Windows 10: KB3140743 fails to update

I am having an issue installing KB3140743 on my Windows 10 computer. At the suggestion of another user I am starting a new thread in the hopes that I can get this issue resolved. (Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 KB3140743)

For reference here was the post I made:Hello Everyone,

I cannot seem to update my computer via KB3140743. I have tried doing this from Windows Update and the standalone installer. It appears that it is working but when I restart the computer it eventually says that the update failed to install and undoes whatever changes it has made. I am not sure where to look to get more information. The other update that came today did install (KB3139907).

I am running windows 10 Pro - 64-bit. If you want other system specs let me know. I never have had an issue with an update not installing since I upgraded.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
Things I have tried per recommendations:

• sfc /scannow - issues were detected and repaired however this did not resolve the issue
• Dism - Did the ScanHealth and RestoreHealth commands. They ran ok with no indications of issues but unfortunately did not solve the issue.

KB314074 Update Boot time Now Over An Hour!

Update history is:

KB3140743 successfully installed

KB319907 successfully installed

KB3140743 Failed to install

Restart time is still 1-2 hours

 

Hello and thanks in advance for your help, I can not seem to update KB3140743 it downloads then on reset it fails to install updates.. with no error code

No change. KB3140743 keeps on being pushed and then fails. Thanks for the help nonetheless.

The error is in KB3140743 not taking into account a wide enough set of circumstances I think,

I did try a clean boot as well but this did not work either.

Hmmm..let's see...
dispci.dll is a Microsoft Display Class Installer; 0x13 indicates a write error/write protect error of some sort
The rest are related to bluetooth.

Any BT devices connected that you can get rid of temporarily? Or phone software which installs BT-related drivers?

EDIT: Did you/can you also try it with Norton removed?

 

Try to start the built in Windows firewall even if not using it normally as seems without it Win 10 is not happy to update. Go to Services and if Windows Firewall is disabled set it to manual and start it and try to update again. You can disable it once done and restarted but will have to re-enable it for updates

 

Well I run Nortons firewall, and in my services, I have the Windows Firewall set to Automatic. Then when Windows sees Nortons firewall wall installed, Windows allows Norton control, and turns Windows Firewall off. Even thou its ON in services.
So your idea might be correct, but maybe the user should check his setting in services, and see how it is configured.
Just a suggestion.... still might have other problems causing his update error.

 

I am at work now but I did a clean boot last night which also included disabling Norton (preventing it from running). I believe I am set-up as OldMike indicated but would need to check. I honestly don't believe it is Norton causing this. I am fairly good at problem solving but this one just has me stuck. Perhaps it is a signal that I should do a fresh install but I would like to avoid that if I can.

Are there error logs in windows 10 that show what happened if the update failed? If so where are they?

Nortons never has stopped any of my Windows update. I have Nortons on 2 different computers. As far as an error log, for update issues, I'm not sure. simrick will most likey know. You are not alone thou, seems to be a few others with problems installing these latest updates. Right now I would suggest waiting for simrick to give you more suggestions. Strange that you DID install 1 of the 2 updates thou successfully. Check your service settings for Windows Firewall when you get home, just to make sure its ON Automatic. if it is not....after you change it to Auto, Reboot .....

There's also setuperr.log usually in C:\Windows or C:\Windows\Logs. I can't get into a W10 general release rig ATM, only Insider rigs.

 

Well found a link from MS if you want to try manual install.

But doing some google searching found lots of other people had the same problem with only THIS KB3140743 update.
When you get home, check your Win version. Just to see if you are on build 10586.122 If you are, then maybe you should just wait for a while, IF you are having no other problems with your Windows. Just a thought.
