Windows 10: KB3140743 fails to update

I tried removing Norton but that did not have any impact on the issue. Thanks for the suggestion minimojoman, I have done that before but this time I think I will try a repair install.

OK stupid question, I am prepping for the repair install and per the guide I need to make sure "the installation media (ex: build[/b] as your currently installed Windows 10. If it's not, then the repair install will fail."

I have windows 10 pro with build 1511 10586.104. As long as the ISO is a 1511 build I am ok right? I don't need one that is specifically 10586.104? If I do I am not sure how to get it.

Yes you are correct, all you need is the Windows Pro ISO and build 1511 Yes.. that should work just fine for your repair.

Well after the repair install everything seems back to normal. I am now on version 10586.122 of build 1511. It all actually went pretty seamlessly following the instructions in this guide:

Thanks again for your assistance. I would still like to figure out why it happened but sometimes I suppose it is better to just move on.

I may have some unwelcome news for you. I couldn't install the previous two updates (KB3124262 and KB3135173). I gave up on KB3124262 hoping the next one would fix the problem, but KB3135173 wouldn't install either. My PC, (which is a spare fortunately) has got two drives and only a keyboard and mouse attached. After trying a manual install, repair Windows and disconnecting the second drive I bit the bullet and did a clean install. That didn't work, so eventually I tried an in-place-upgrade which took hours but did work.

But guess what. Now KB3140743 won't install with exactly the same symptoms as KB3124262 and KB3135173! It can't be hardware related as the in-place-upgrade took Windows to the correct version. So it's back to square one for me.

 

Well, that's not good news for you, sorry to hear. But on another note, MS should be releasing another update later today.... maybe, as its update Tuesday.

 

Agreed. A lot of people have had problems installing this KB3140743 update; some finally succeeded, only to have their systems completely borked, while others are waiting it out.
