    KB3156421 - Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511

Seems to have fixed the gpedit.msc errror msg.

    Noted this comment:
Microsoft has confirmed that one of the latest Windows 10 cumulative updates, KB3156421 specifically, is making some PCs really slow, and apparently this is a known issue.
Something that Redmond has known for a few weeks now, and has been trying to track down and fix.
This is the latest cumulative update that the software titan released for users running the November Update version of Windows 10. Microsoft is calling for users to share feedback about any bugs that they experience with this patch.
Microsoft engineer John Wink explained that this is because of a Cortana incompatibility:
“If you find that your PC is abnormally slow after installing the update, you may be seeing a problem that I’ve been trying to track down for a couple of weeks. Here’s something you can try to see if it alleviates the symptom. I’d love to hear the results of this test, and could really use your help in gathering additional information if indeed it rectifies the symptom for you. Please give this a shot and post your results to this thread. Thanks!”
A possible workaround for this slowdown is also out.
The simplest solution is to disable Cortana.

    KB3156421 - Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511

    Hi,

This is my first post on the support website so apologies if I leave something out or this is posted in the wrong place.

This update was automatically installed on my Windows 10 Pro computer a few days ago and is causing my PC to reboot continually. I purchased Windows 10 from the MS store back in last August and it has been running fine so far. Here is my hardware,

    Motherboard: ASUS|SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 R
    CPU: AMD|8-CORE FX-8150 3.6G 8M R
Memory: Seagate Desktop 4 TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6 GB with NCQ 64 MB Cache 3.5-Inch (ST4000DX001)
    Graphics: ASUS GeForce GTX 970
    Power: CORSAIR|TX650 V2 650W R
    Ram: 8Gx4|GSKILL F3-1600C9Q-32GSR R

I've been looking around and haven't found a solution. It starts up, shows the windows logo, I can choose between windows 10 or 7, and when I choose 10 it shows a windows logo again and reboots. Windows 7 also doesn't work, but that has been the case since I upgraded (pretty sure windows 7 from when I inherited this cpu wasn't legitimate, which is why I purchased 10 from the MS store when I got it). I have tried starting in safe mode, and repairing windows 10 from my installation USB. I don't have any restore points saved, but all my data is backed up via a network drive. Do I have to reinstall everything from square one or is there a solution to stop my computer from continually rebooting?

    Thanks,

  5. Update went well ----- or so I thought.

Have lost access to the Start menu, can't use Edge, calculator, and many other Apps ........ ( Maps, etc)

Not sure what I should do, as other things are still working okay .....

Do you have a system restore point? What happens if you uninstall it?

Do you want Windows 7 ? If no backup your data and go to fresh install Windows 10. You could download ISO from here Tech Bench and make a bootable DVD or USB.

Thanks for the link. It looks like I will have to do a fresh install of Windows 10. I bet there is some fancy way to fix it, but a fresh install may unfortunately be the best option at this point.

It seems this update fixed my broken apps (because of attempts repair non working start menu)
Start menu works again as well, but that's normal after an update. Normally it's only for a week or so. Let's see how long the fun will last.

You could also try an upgrade of your current installation. If you do this your apps and applications will be preserved, but windows will be reinstalled. I have had to do this to correct some windows issues on an early production version. It worked well.

  12. Made a fresh install the 10th and was on 10586.218_Dual_Boot, May 12th updates was the source of many bugs and unstable issues; KB3156421 was installed twice and KB890630 failed to install. Got this last one manually. See screenshot.

    KB3156421 - Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511

After the update I had a problem with the Windows DVD Player App. It was grayed out and would not connect. Got error 0X00000005.
Ran system restore and the Windows DVD Player App worked. Tuesday's updates ran again and the Windows DVD Player App appeared to be ok till I went to a local user, it turned gray and would not connect. I then decided to hide Windows Updates KB3152599 (not sure why I got this one) and KB3156421, going back to the previous restore point, allowing the other updates to install. The Windows DVD App working again for all users. *Confused

@gtspeck: how do you hide an update? glad to see your posting, seems like a bit of a nightmare to not be able to just get an update alert & decide if you want to take it now - or want to put it off & the whole idea of the default of restarting to install when D/L is done is scary, what if your battery is low? the screen says not to turn off your computer; & there is no progress bar…?!

Yes, I have setting for delaying install of update; but what about the option to not take it now?

Not just complaining- To All: would like to know what would happen if battery dies during install of update?

    tia,

The conventional wisdom and most warnings say to do important or long duration installs and updates on Notebooks WITH the battery installed and having the power supply plugged into a power source just to avoid problems. If an update or Upgrade fails due to power loss it could mean reinstalling the Operating System and all programs plus loss of personal data. The same applies to Desktop computers in having them plugged into a UPS/Uninterruptible Power Supply, especially in areas of unstable power sources. As a sidenote, I have seen HDDs get their format changed to RAW in such sudden power failures, difficult to recover from. Years ago wife's motherboard was damaged by short sharp power bumps, would have been cheaper to have a UPS on it [actually now have on all my computers].
