Only CU's up the version number. This KB is just a micro code update for Skylake cpu's.

It looks like additional CPU microcode updates will be added to KB4090007. But for some reason the original version of KB4090007 is still available on the Microsoft Update Catalog.

The 1 MB MSU file download links for KB4090007 on the first post are for the newer March 13th version with the new included microcode updates. *Smile

 

Very bizarre that this is not handled through WU where the exact System CPU can be checked against an updated KB and when finally the microcode update is available for the platform installed automatically and without delay for Intel has long released microcode updates for a lot more CPU's than Microsoft have incorporated in the two releases so far.

All in all I don't think it's that bizarre at all. You need to disconnect yourself from your own personal position and look at the bigger picture., the industry etc.
I must say I very much admire MS for taking over OEM's responsibility to update oldish devices. Quite clever and wise decisions I reckon.

That said, I can undertand people with older CPU's wanting a fix but frankly folks, the chance of being hit is smaller than winning the lottery. So, be patient...

The OS will copy the newer microcode code to the CPU during boot time. Once the system is shutdown, the copied microcode stays in the OS partition, but not in the CPU in itself. If the system only has Windows OS, loosing the copied microcode in the CPU does not matter. Windows just copies the microcode again at the next time the system is booted.

If the system is dual booted and neither the BIOS nor the second OS have the latest microcode, the second OS is vulnerable to the Meltdown/Spectre exploits.

There's some disadvantage for manually applying the KB4090007. If the backup image restored does not have this patch installed, it will be vulnerable until it is installed, provided the BIOS had not been updated with the latest microcode. The same goes for reinstalling Windows, since the KB4090007 is not pushed to Windows by MS.

If the motherboard has been updated with the latest microcode, it does not matter if the KB4090007 had been installed manually, or not. Windows, for that matter Linux, will not overwrite the microcode, if and when the BIOS has the same or later version of the microcode.
