  1. KB4586781 crashing explorer.exe

I came home to a frozen PC today, having to hit the reset button to reboot. When I did, I had to wait for a moment because apparently some Windows updates have been applied. Once I was able to log in, explorer.exe kept on crashing and attempting to reload, giving a screen-flickering experience. It went on doing the flickering for about 15 minutes until it loaded normally. The first thing I did was checked the Event Viewer applications log to see the error information:

Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 10.0.19041.610, time stamp: 0xab30c679

This issue reminded me of a previous update problem I've encountered in the past involving KB4579311 which you can read more about here:

    windows-update-kb4579311-causing-explorer-to-crash

This post is for anyone who ends up having to go through the same issues I did with this update and to let everyone know the workaround to uninstall & disable the update listed for that update problem works for KB4586781 too. Whatever is going on with ucrtbase.dll in these updates really needs to be addressed.

    :)

  2. Windows explore crash when searching

The tenforums link solved this issue for me.

The root cause is a Windows 10 bug where File Explorer crashes when long file names are included in a search result. The steps for the workaround are:

    • Open File Explorer
    • Click View > Options
    • Open the View tab
    • Check "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
    • Click OK

    Explorer crashing

Thanks Zat. I had never looked at event viewer and it had more info than I thought. Seems the problem was a second computer I was trying to network with. Unplugging the ethernet cable fixed the crashes. Explorer must have been looking in the wrong place I guess.
