KB5000842 improves Windows 10 File Explorer and kills old Edge browser

In March, a Windows 10 version 21H1 preview update addressed several long-running problems with File Explorer, including a bug that can break search filters if you use November 2019 Update or newer.

With the KB5000842 update, Microsoft has ported these fixes to Windows 10 version 20H2 and version 2004 in an effort to improve the File Explorer experience for more users. After the update, the search filter is working again and it looks like the tech giant has also addressed reliability issues.

For those uninitiated, Windows 10 November 2019 Update broke the search feature in File Explorer whereby the filter panel can become unresponsive when performing a local file search.

As you can see in the above screenshot, File Explorer stops responding when attempting to filter the search results using the date, file size and date modified. This bug affects the column heading only when you try to access the filters on a search page.

In our tests, we observed that Windows 10 KB5000842 has finally fixed the ‘Computing Filters’ error and performance issues when filtering the search results in File Explorer.

Furthermore, Microsoft has also addressed performance issues caused by Explorer.exe whereby a memory leak bug could make the explorer window unresponsive and consume additional system resources.

    KB5000842 update kills Microsoft Edge

KB5000842 is also the first update that will remove the old Microsoft Edge from Windows 10.

As you may be aware, Windows 10 still carries the legacy Microsoft Edge even if you’ve already installed Chromium Edge. In other words, old Edge is essentially present in the background of your system but hidden.

However, this patch will completely remove the retired browser from Windows 10, and users will be upgraded to Chromium Edge if they’re still using the old version.

It’s also worth noting Microsoft has already confirmed that your default browser preference will remain unchanged after applying the optional or the upcoming mandatory April Patch Tuesday patch.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner.
    "

Forget extensions, built-in ad blocking is coming to Microsoft Edge - [UPDATE... no it's not!]

Microsoft Internet Explorer renamed to Windows Internet Explorer ?

KB5000842 improves Windows 10 File Explorer and kills old Edge browser wie1.png

Since version 7 of the world`s most popular web browser - Microsoft Internet Explorer was silently renamed to Windows Internet Explorer.Such a step from Microsoft is not a surprise since Internet Explorer is part of the Windows operation system for a long time.Obviously Microsoft corp. wants to state that Internet Explorer is already considered as a part of Windows and not as an external browser (remember the IE and WMP law issues last year!?).
