  1. KB5017308 on Windows 10 21H2 breaks Group Policy file copy in Computer context

We have a Group Policy Preference implemented which copies a preconfigured HOSTS file from a network share to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts.This worked perfectly until recently. We suspect this is because of KB5017308 recently deployed. The GPO file copy runs in the Computer context not User, via Computer Configuration, Preferences, Windows Settings, Files. One workaround proposed by some change action from Replace to Update does not fix the issue.Another workaround proposed by others uncheck "Run in logged-on user's security context" box is not relevant because that is a Use

    :)

group policy editor VS registry settings

ALL settings are applied through the registry. The Group Policy Editor is just a GUI with a set of templates containing the registry settings required.

Microsoft publish this spreadsheet listing all the policies and the registry settings they use.

    GROUP POLICIES IN WINDOWS 10

You can change Group Policies by opening Group Policy Editor first. You can open it by following these steps:

    • Log in an administrator account. If you are already logged in as an administrator, proceed to step 2.
    • Press Windows + R to open Run.
    • Type gpedit.msc and press Enter.

After opening Group Policy Editor, you can now make the necessary changes that you want.

Should you have more concerns, feel free to post.

    Regards.
