Windows 10: Keep getting The Device is not ready prompt on a external hardrive

Reading External HDD from Command Prompt - Device Not Ready

My HP will not boot to Windows, so I am trying to copy files from my laptop HDD to an external HDD. However from the Command Prompt, when I attempt to switch to the External drive, I get a "The device is not ready" error. I am able to read all drives
on the laptop HDD. Do I need to load a driver to read the External HDD? If so, how do I do that? If not, any idea why I am getting this error? Thank you.

Hello all techies need your help.

I have been using my External hardrive case with different memory card plug in the front of the external hardrive case.

It has been working for over five years fine and something happened that it wants to now format it. I know all the information is still on the Hardrive. However, how do I get my windows to recognize the Hardrive or hardrive to recognize windows? I don't
want to lose all my data please.

Toshiba external hard drive not recognized

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that the external hard drive is not recognized by the PC. I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue.
It would be great if you can answer these questions to assist you in a better way.

• Did you try connecting the Hardrive to different USB Port?
  
• Does the Hardrive get detected if you try connecting it to a different PC?
  
• Are you aware of any changes made to the computer recently?
  

I suggest you refer and follow the steps mentioned in the KB article and check if that resolves the issueError:
“USB Device not recognized” when you try to access a USB external hard drive

Note: Ignore method 2 & 5 from the above article.
