Keyboard caps lock reversed and number keys not working. Even after using external keyboard still facing same problem

Caps lock freezes keyboard

Hi. When I press caps lock, my laptop keyboard freezes and it seems activates the Windows key at the same time. It also brings up speech recognition, multiple display function, and starts typing '8' on repeat if a text box is available.

When I used a keyboard tester, it seems caps lock also activates ESC, F4, P, *, and 8 simultaneously.

The only way to unlock my keyboard is by pressing caps lock again on the onscreen keyboard, or an external keyboard.

My laptop is a HP Pavilion 15. My laptop has worked fine for years, but this issue started a few months ago, and tried many things to fix it.

1. I ran the keyboard troubleshooter, but no issues detected.
2. I updated my keyboard driver, and uninstalled my keyboard driver.
3. I tried an external USB keyboard and a Bluetooth keyboard, both have the same problem. Using the onscreen keyboard also causes it.
4. I changed caps lock to SHIFT, but when I press the caps lock key accidentally it is the same problem.
5. I ran Malware Bytes, but nothing found.
6. I ran HP hardware diagnostics, the keyboard passed the test.

7. I tried caps lock in Safe Mode and still the same problem.

Lastly, few days ago, I installed a new hard drive, and did a fresh install of Windows 10. I completed all Windows updates, but I still have the same problem.

Is there anything else I can try? Thanks.

 

Caps Lock Reversed

You can try following -

1. Run Keyboard Troubleshooter

Type Troubleshoot in Windows Start Search box > Click Troubleshoot > Scroll down and click Keyboard > Run the troubleshooter > Follow onscreen directions

2. Update Keyboard Driver

Windows Key+X (Or right click on Start) > Click Device Manager > Expand Keyboards > Right click on Standard PS/2 Keyboard > Click Update Driver Software > Click Browse my computer for driver software > Click Let my pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
> Choose Standard PS/2 Keyboard > Click Next to update

3. There is a very interesting fix for this problem in below link. Go into Microsoft Word and type tHANKS, it will autocorrect itself to Thanks. After this, this problem becomes allright.

Keyboard lights

1. Did you mean the keyboard backlight or indicator lights (i.e. Num Lock)?
2. If your problem is about indicator lights, are you using a external keyboard?

--KEYBOARD BACKLIGHT--

Consult your laptop's manual downloaded from the internet. You might want to install some drivers in order to use the backlight.

--INDICATOR LIGHT--

1. LAPTOP KEYBOARD
   • If indicator light, try pressing the Caps Lock key and see if the caps lock light turned on. Same process for Scroll and Num lock.
   • Some laptops may show the "Caps Lock ON" in your laptop screen.
2. EXTERNAL KEYBOARD (EITHER USB OR BLUETOOTH)
   • When you use the external keyboard, locate the "Caps Lock" key indicator light. Try pressing the "Caps Lock" and make sure if it is turned on. Same process for Scroll and Num Lock.

If these are not working, try installing or updating the drivers. You'll need to restart after installing.
