Windows 10: [Keyboard] How to deal with external keyboard that does not like the Fn key?

I've recently started using an external keyboard, but while using it I've noticed that the f keys only act like the f keys. I really like utilizing the function lock alternate inputs from the keyboard built into my laptop such as the volume and brightness buttons, but I can't use them on my external keyboard. Even though it has an Fn key, it is not registered by my laptop or Power Toys every other key seems to work well tho. If I need to, I'll remap the volume/brightness/whatever buttons to the keys of my unused number pad, but I'd rather not if I don't have to. Are there any trustworthy

If the Fn key on your keyboard is not working in Windows 11, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Check for driver updates: Go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers for your keyboard. Install them and see if the Fn key starts working.
   
2. Enable the Fn key in BIOS/UEFI settings: Restart your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings by pressing the designated key (usually F2, Del, or Esc) during startup. Look for an option related to the Fn key and make sure it is enabled.
   
3. Try a different keyboard: If possible, connect a different keyboard to your computer and see if the Fn key works with it. This will help determine if the issue is with the keyboard itself or the computer's settings.
   
4. Check keyboard settings in Windows: Open the Settings app, go to "Devices," and select "Typing." Make sure the "Use the F1-F12 keys as standard function keys" option is not enabled. If it is enabled, try disabling it and see if the Fn key starts working.
   
5. Reset keyboard settings: Open the Settings app, go to "Devices," and select "Typing." Scroll down and click on "Advanced keyboard settings." Under the "Reset your keyboard" section, click on the "Reset" button. This will reset any custom keyboard settings and may fix the Fn key issue.

Keyboard choices, advice please

Inb4 bumblebee and her massive rants on mechanical keyboards, YES IM GOING MECHANICAL.



The current choice is the Razer Black widow ultimate.

It has a list of things i really want.

• Black keyboard
• Blue LED
• Mechanical switches
• USB port
• USB soundcard built in (for LAN use - not a neccesity)
• Easy to use Macro keys
• Standard key layout - i HATE keyboards where its altered, or the keys are a different size to normal.
• Compact size - keyboards that are three feet wide due to 5 rows of G keys and 12 feet tall due to an LCD are out. this thing has to fit on cramped desks at LAN events.
• Media Keys are a must

Things i dont like

• Price
• Noisy keys - hell they advertise its as loud as a mouse click, that worries me. a lot.
• Media keys are controlled through a Fn key. its ok, but i prefer dedicated keys.

So, does anyone have any alternatives that i can buy in australia, that meet my requirements?


edit: G19 is ruled out due to it requiring external power. so please dont suggest it. (yes, i know its not mechanical - but its a similar price range)

 

Fn Lock and external keyboard function keys (F-keys acting as multimedia keys)

Hi there,

So I seem to have this problem with my external keyboard.

The 'Fn lock' is enabled on my laptop, but still the F-keys on my external keyboard act as if it were off (act as multimedia keys). When I turn off 'Fn lock' on my laptop, the F-keys on my external keyboard still act as multimedia keys. As far as I can see there's no one that's had this specific problem, more often it's the way around (external keyboard keys NOT acting as multimedia keys).

I'm using a Lenovo Ideapad 5 laptop and a Logitech K400+ external bluetooth keyboard.

Does anyone know how to solve this issue?
