Windows 10: Keyboard not working / USB not recognized

I'm using a Surface Book 2 with Windows 10 Pro. The keyboard and touchpad stopped working today, and every few seconds an error message pops up saying "USB device not recognised. The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it."

I've tried doing a system restore to before the problem started, uninstalling and reinstalling the USB and keyboard drivers, restarting from BIOS, and restarting with and without the keyboard attached.

Anybody got any ideas?

The USB port may have stopped responding after you remove or insert a USB device. When the port is in this state, it no longer recognizes any USB device. Aside from the troubleshooting steps you’ve performed, you can also scan the Device Manager for
hardware changes. Follow the steps below:

• Go to the Device Manager.
• Click the Action tab.
• Select Scan for hardware changes and follow the prompts to reinstall the missing driver.
• Check the USB device if it is already working.

laptop keyboard and touchpad not working


Problem: computer starts up normally and goes to the password log-in screen, but nothing happens when I try to enter the password. The computer doesn't appear to see any keystrokes.
Solutions tried:

1. rebooted
2. removed and replaced main battery
3. attached USB keyboard
4. hit Enter key on startup: successful in opening the Advance Options menu, but am unable to take any of the actions because all require that I enter the laptop password
5. looked for an onscreen keyboard, but there isn't one because this isn't a touch screen computer

Why I think this is a Windows issue:

1. the computer recognizes when I hit the Enter key on startup
2. the USB keyboard doesn’t work
3. the keyboard touchpad doesn’t work, but the attached USB mouse DOES work
