Kick off the windows 10 residue

    Hello,

i'm on a 18GO memory pc. I'm running with windows 8, but when i first bought it i tried to instal windows 10 and I quickly see that I was lacking of space. So i weren't able to dl windows 10, but it filled up my memory and i don't know how what I dl, i don't want to make any mistake. I tried the research "windows 10"... I have been through many sites but all of them explain how to uninstal windows 10 only. I haven't met anyone on any forum with my problem.

Could you help me solve this. (I'm going along with this problem since i bought it, 5 months)

    :)

  2. Kicked off

    Hi Dennis,

I haven't yet seen too many problems with using a home network with Windows 10.

When you reinitialize your router, how do you do this? I would normally shut down all my devices. I unplug the modem and the router from the power source. On the back of each device, I unplug the AC cord. With all machines, this includes HDTVs and other
external wireless devices, turned off, power up your modem first. It'll go through the blinking stages. Next, I plug the router back in. Since you have reinitialized the router previously, check the Ethernet cable to make sure it snaps in properly. Also,
check the Ethernet connection on the modem.

Power up a device. When you get to the login screen, restart the computer. Windows 10 does not shut down in the sense that you see in Windows 7. Shutting down a Windows 10 computer sort of puts it into a deep sleep state. A restart, on the other hand,
loads all drivers and configurations fresh. You know this happens in Windows 8.1. It never hurts to mention the restart in Windows 10.

Are you familiar with the settings for your router? What brand and model is it?

Open Internet Explorer. If you don't see an icon for it, click on Start, then All Apps, then Windows Accessories, then Internet Explorer.

Most routers use a common IP address such as http://192.168.1.1,
http://192.168.0.1, or http://192.168.2.1. These numbers are what you type into the address bar on IE. Linksys, you’d
    type http://192.168.1.1. D-Link router, you’ll type
    http://192.168.0.1.

You will get asked to Log In. Usually, the user name is
admin and the password is password. The website linked to below has the most comprehensive list of routers and the default username and passwords.

    http://portforward.com/default_username_password/

I advise to put an administrative password on the router since the default password is very easy to figure out.

Here is a link to user guides or manuals for many popular routers. Select your brand of router, for example, Netgear, Belkin or Linksys. When you click on your brand, the next page will have model numbers.

    http://setuprouter.com/

I have used the following website for many years. The information is straight forward and reliable.

    How To Forward a Port

A link for securing and configuring your router.

    Secure WiFi in WinXP

Make certain your security settings are set properly. I actually had to allow my devices, or enable them in my router settings.

Visit the router manufacturer's support website. Search for your model number and see if there are any issues with Windows 10. Perhaps the router has a firmware upgrade available.

It's not outside the possibilities that your modem or your router could be failing. You can test by connecting your modem directly to a desktop computer with a 10/100 Ethernet cable. Bypass the router, all together, and see if your internet is working
    better.

Are both machines identical? I does not sound like the case. Two different devices having problems with the network or the internet sounds like a router or modem problem.

You could try running the Network and Internet Troubleshooters in the Control Panel. Right click on Start > Control Panel > View By: Large Icons > Troubleshooting.

Are you using any particular Antivirus or Firewall programs on both machines?

If you have any questions, I'll be happy to help.

Kick off the windows 10 residue

    Hello Nicololo,

It sounds like some of the Windows 10 installation files were downloaded onto your hard drive in preparation for the installation of W10 and they are probably still there taking up space. This could be around 4GB of files.

Here is a tutorial from the SevenForums which shows how Extended Disk Cleanup can clear out windows installation files (it works in W8 too). Make sure you check the references to windows installation files but you can also check any others you see that might help you get more space back.

  5. Run Disk Cleanup > Clean up system files > check the box for "Temporary installation files" Then see what that gets you for free space

An alternative to the built-in disk cleanup is to use CCleaner.
I have been using it myself since Windows 7 days.
In CCleaner, on the left side, under Windows tab, scroll down to Advanced. If you still have installation files in the system, there will be a box for that. check it and then run CCleaner.

    Thanks for answering Philc43,
I have done the tutorial but it didn't gave me space. I think it's because i had done a ccleaner analyse just before. By the way it was the first time i wrote into those kinds of "black notepad"^^

Alphanumeric i searched several names on my research bar to find it but nothing, it might due to my "unexact traduction" toward french. Thanks for anwsering *Smile

Davidhk, thanks, i discovered things of ccleaner i didn't know, I actually have 12GO filled by "other files" :S.

I start to ponder if there really are some transistion files or if already throught them away when during my ccleaner uses.
