Kingston datatraveler suddenly becomes write protected

    Hi,

I have a kingston usb flash drive datatraveler G4 64GB and out of the blue this drive is always popping up the "disc write protected error".The group policy that controls this is set to "not configured" also when i use diskpart it completes successfully but the disc is still write protected. There is no fysical switch on the drive that controls this so .... *Eek ?

in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies value WriteProtect set it to 0 (dword value) but it all doesn't help....

    :)

    How to remove write protection?

I have a 200 GB Lexar microSD card that suddenly becomes write protected. There is no any physical switch on the card and adapter. I tried to change the following key Value data of WriteProtect from
    1 to 0

    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies

There was no any effect to the write protection. Is there any way to remove the write protection? Thanks!

That's a first and most common sign of a dying USB stick.

This probably won't help, but worth a shot.
Start a Command Prompt as Admin,
Type Diskpart and press enter. (ie) DISKPART>now type
List Volume and press enter, the various Volumes (Partitions) on your computer are shown with their Volume #'s including your Flash drive, Now type
Select Volume # , Where, # is the number of the Volume you want to select and press enter. Your Flash drive volume now has an asterisk next to it showing it is selected. Now type
attrib vol clear readonly and press enter. Now type
Exit to exit diskpart. then Exit again to exit command Prompt.
Press the Win key+X and choose Disk Management and press enter. In the lower pane, your Flash drive will be listed. Right click it and choose Change Drives Letter or Paths, Remove the Drive letter click OK.
Now assign the drive letter you want.
if this fails, the Flash Drive has failed and needs to be replaced.

I tryed this firstly the "attrib vol clear readonly" command fails with a "operation not supported on removable media" message and secondly in disk management i do see the "Change Drives letter or paths" menuitem but it is greyed out i guess this flash drive is for my trashcan....

In Diskpart, instead of List Volume, try List Disk. Select Disk the Flash drive Disk #, and then type
attrib disk clear readonly if this fails, then bin it.

If you can't format in Disk Management then this one is toast.
