Windows 10: KMS/Volume licensed Windows 10 Pro expired. New key I bought does not work.

I'm using a computer with KMS/Volume licensed Windows 10 Pro. Its about to expire.


Last night I called MS. The agent told my I could just but a new product key and I'd be fine.


I bought a new version of Windows 10 Pro, entered the key, and It didn't work.

Am I doing something wrong or was the agent incorrect?

Win 10 activation is expiring - volume license


I ran the Dell OS recovery tool. It says I can only install Win 7 pro.
I'm guessing this laptop was delivered as a Win 7 Pro, then either it was wiped clean by the guy who sold it and he installed Win 10 with a volume license and activate it with KMS or it was updated at the company that owned it with a volume license and the guy who sold it on ebay bought it after the lease expired.

as I was searching around with some different key tools and I found out this Win 10 installation was activated almost exactly 1 year ago. So sounds like some kine of corporate license that has to be re-activated each year.

to the last post-- I can't re-install Win-10 because I don't have it. I bought this laptop used and it was already installed. I didn't get any backup disks with it.
Why would it work with the Win7 key after a clean install if it will not active with the win7 key now?

 

Windows License Expiring?

You need to purchase a genuine license. You have a Windows 10 Pro volume license client that uses KMS activation.

Both Pro and Enterprise are licensed to large organizations that deploy Windows 10 in bulk to hundreds or thousands of computers. Volume License clients such as Pro and Enterprise (as they are technically known), can also use different methods of activation.
For mass activation, KMS licensing (Key Management Server) provides centralized management of activation requests for each client. This is also used to handle activation because KMS clients are not setup for permanent activation, since they expire every 180
days (6 months). This requires client computers to maintain in contact with organization server in order not go into reduced functional mode and result in errors like the above.

 

Windows 10 pro clean install possible if was activated using a KMS key?

My laptop was bought brand new (according to the seller) and is an hp that came installed with FreeBIOS (so no OEM windows product key).

Apparently somebody (don't know who) installed windows 10 pro on it with a KMS client key. I started getting a popup yesterday saying that my version was about to expire etc. I've managed to push the expiration date back by downloading an update via the
windows website but want to know how I can prevent this from happening ever again.

So here are my questions

1. Can I and should I clean install windows 10 pro over this KMS activated version?

2. Or is a clean install not necessary and can I just upgrade to a digitally licensed version by just purchasing a product key?
