Windows 10: KRAck

Discus and support KRAck in AntiVirus, Firewalls and System Security to solve the problem; Bit odd that Norton would charge for something that they should be covering anyway? Well I upgraded to version 1709 which apparently has the necessary anti virus included in the upgrade.
I thought it was a cheek too especially since I am supposed to have Deluxe anti virus coverage. It is something I will be taking up with them tomorrow.

    Cheers,

  2. Excellent V1607 to V1709. Don't forget to take an Image with a tool like Macrium Reflect.

I run Norton AV, I don't recall seeing ant ad.

Yeah, I hadn't seen one either....until yesterday afternoon. One of the ones that pops up on the bottom R of the screen occasionally. It mentioned krack, but I didn't really read it, just X'd it off.

I am trying to discover whether MS Windows10 Vers 7109 has protection against a KRACK Wi-Fi attack? Cannot seem to get an answer, except from Norton who want £30 for a years protection which I think is a bit much as I am already a customer of theirs. I have turned on my MS Defender but am wondering if that is enough. Any ideas?

    Cheers,

and it appears to want you to buy a VPN like service. Not really a fix for the weakness other than a VPN tunnel within.

  7. Ron, Macrium Reflect allows you to take an "Image" (copy) of your entire system or just the partitions that support Windows operation.

So the idea is you have a working copy of Windows, things are the way you want them, programs have been customized, networks set, program defaults set etc. So now you take an Image, maybe you take one a week, one every two weeks or a month.

Should a bug come along, or an update craps out your system you pull out your Image and restore your system.

There are some strategies you can use around your data. Lots of members keep on separate partition making restoration of system less complex.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

    Hi Ken,
Thanks for sending me the reflection programme. I will have to print the instructions, sit, read and digest and decide whether my ancient brain will be able to cope with it all. As an aside, I have just finished a long and protractive conversation with the Microsoft Chat line chap who was very helpful and pleasant, just like you... Unfortunately he was unable to answer my question which was "Does Windows10 version 1709 provide Wi-Fi protection like other versions. He said it was a good question and that he did not know the answer however, he has documented my question and it is being passed on to the engineering department who he swears will send me an e-mail answering my needs. No one seems to know the answer and Norton want me to pay $39-50 for their VPN software. I am going to wait and see what MS have to say before I spend any money and will keep you posted. Interesting that an MS employee doesn't know the answer don't you think?

  9. Make sure you are connected via SSL at all times and you are safe. No need to panic. WiFi is still as insecure as ever.

Just use "Smart HTTPS" or "HTTPS Everywhere" extensions for your browser.

What if I get to a web site that only has http:www etc etc. I don't understand being connected to SSL, is this something I have to turn on, on my computer please??

  11. HTTPS is an extension and will try to connect you to the secure site if possible. That is the address that starts with https

Not all sites use this, https.

When you connect to bank or bank (and lots of others, like this forum), look at the address. It starts with HTTPS.

If not secured what you are keying and receiving is sent back and forth to servers in clear next. The WPA encrypts the data between your PC and Router.

Ron you are safe. Use a good AV, don't do banking on free public hotspots, keep your software patch and your passwords unique.

  12. That depends, do you mind, if someone sees, that you are reading recipes or something like that?
Payments and logins on serious webpages are always done via SSL, so they can not be eavesdropped.
