  1. L2TP VPN connection fails on new Windows 10 install due to Xbox Live Networking Service

I just wanted to share my experience trying to diagnose my L2TP connection issues with a brand new computer with a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro to hopefully save others the hours of trouble shooting this cost me.

I have a newly built machine that I use for work, and to access my work recourses I use an L2TP VPN. Immediately after installing Windows 10 and updating the drivers for the various components of the system, my VPN was working. However, after installing all my software and the subsequent reboots, the VPN failed to connect with the following error:

The network connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be established because the remote server is not responding. This could be because one of the network devices e.g. firewalls, NAT, routers, etc between your computer and the remote server is not configured to allow VPN connections. Please contact your Administrator or your service provider to determine which device may be causing the problem.

In between it working and then not working, I had installed Office 365, turned on all features of Developer Tools, sideloaded some custom applications, and installed some windows updates, as well as installing Steam and Xbox Beta. A lot to troubleshoot.

I had tried the registry key fix mentioned many places on the web, recreated the VPN connection, and tried a number of other suggested fixes from the web. I was finally completely fed up with everything and decided to completely wipe the system and start over.

Again, the VPN worked straight out of the gate, so I installed each piece of software and drivers one at a time, rebooted, and tested the VPN connection.

Turns out, if the Xbox Live Networking Service is running the VPN will not work. If you disable this server, the VPN connects right back up again. I haven't found anything that the Xbox Live Networking Services is required for, but it will be easy to turn on if needed.

I hope this helps others who have strange phantom VPN issues.

    :)

  2. Error: 788, when connecting to L2TP VPN

Hi there, recently I got this error when connecting to "L2TP/IPSec with certificate" VPN. I'm not sure what cause this.

I have already follow some of this steps with no luck :

    • Adding AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule
    • Restarting both IKE and IPSec services
    • Allowing both CHAP and MS-CHAP v2
    • Reset network connection
    • Connect to different provider
    • Re-adding VPN settings
There also little bit information can be found in the event viewer :

CoId={AEE0E2A8-34DF-41BB-B5F0-0458EFD41751}: The user xxx\xxx has started dialing a VPN connection using a per-user connection profile named yes. The connection settings are:

Windows 10 VPN client issues connecting to OSX L2TP VPN

I am encountering two different issues when connecting to an L2TP connection with a Mac OSX VPN server. I have searched for answers extensively on different websites and can't seem to find the answers to my VPN issues. The VPN server I am attempting to
connect, is located within my home network. All of my Apple devices connect, share drives and files, and browse the internet via the tunnel without issues.

Issue 1 - Connecting via the native windows 10 VPN client is another story. Usually, the first attempt at connecting through this method works. However, if I need to disconnect from the VPN for some reason, any and all connection attempts hang until I leave
the laptop alone for an indeterminate amount of time, minutes, perhaps hours, before it will reconnect again. Here's a brief list of all the things I've attempted in order to solve this issue.

    - Appropriate Ports opened and configured for forwarding on the home router.

    - I have edited the Windows 10 registry to allow for connections behind a NAT.

    - Creating a totally new VPN connection makes no difference.

    - I have uninstalled the drivers for all connection types: L2TP, PPTP, IKE, etc. and scanned for hardware changes and/or restart the computer instead.

    - Connecting to the VPN via Start/Networking and Internet/VPN method makes no difference.

    - I have made sure the IPSEC and other services per the articles are set to RUN and start automatically.

    - I have reset all network settings

Issue 2 - Once successfuly connected to the VPN, I am unable to browse the internet, though I am able to access and map my share drive. "Use default gateway" is selected in VPN connection settings, as I would like all traffic to go through the VPN, including
web traffic. I tried ping and tracert command IP address within and outside the VPN network and everything times out.

    Does anyone have ideas?

  4. L2TP VPN connection fails on new Windows 10 install due to Xbox Live Networking Service

    L2TP VPN on Windows 10

Hello. I'm brand new to Windows 10. I've been living in OS X the past few year and just getting reacquainted with Windows. I'm trying to connect to my VPN server which I've been using (and continue to use) successfully with my Macs and iOS devices. L2TP
    over IPSEC.

I cannot connect to the VPN on my new Windows 10 laptop, though. I've added Firewall exceptions for UDP 50, 500, 4500 and it has made no difference. If I completely disable the firewall and any antivirus, I still can't connect. I get this message:

    Can't connect to VPN

The network connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be established because the remote server is not responding. This could be because of one of the network devices (e.g, firewalls, NAT, routers, etc) between your computer and the remote
server is not configured to allow VPN connections.

I opened a Wireshark capture and there are ISAKMP packets going between my machine and the VPN server, but it doesn't connect. I've searched all over the internet and haven't found a solution. Surely I'm not the only person in the world trying to connect
to a VPN with Windows 10's built in VPN client?

Thanks for anyone that can share some knowledge!
