Windows 10: Laptop blue screens whenever connected to HDMI, help?

So my TV was lagging so I decided to fiddle with the display settings and when I turned the second display from 60 hz to interlaced it suddenly froze up and eventually blue screened. Is there a way to change the second display's settings without actually having it plugged in? Please help.

Blue Screen after unplugging HDMI and on battery power

Here's the scenario of a blue screen that I can reliably reproduce....

• I'm presenting off my Dell Precision 5510 (Windows 10 Pro version 1709 Build 16299.248, 64-bit, 32GB RAM, Intel i7-6820HQ @ 2.70Ghz) while plugged into power. The laptop is connected to a projector via HDMI, with the screen extended (allowing me to see
  one thing on my laptop monitor and other content displayed on the HDMI connected projector.
• Presentation is done. I unplug from HDMI without toggling to displaying only on my PC screen. I just unplug the HDMI cable.
• I unplug from the power supply (thus now on battery power) but have not turned off the laptop or put it in standby.
• I work on some follow-up tasks..... In a matter of minutes the laptop slows, locks, and blue screens.
• The blue screen code varies, but the message about collecting data never goes above 0%.

If I toggle to displaying only on my PC screen, I seem to avoid the blue screen. Also, if I'm under power, it doesn't seem to happen. Finally, if I unplug from power but don't unplug the HDMI, I'm fine. It's when I unplug from HDMI and go to battery power
that the failure happens.

Nothing shows up on memory diagnostics.

You mentioned that the blue screen error appears when you are connecting your HDMI cord to a display device. It could be that your graphics card drivers are outdated. We suggest that you check if there are updates that are waiting to be installed on your
device. Here's how to manually check for updates:

• Press the Windows key + I to open Settings. From
  Settings, click Update & security > Windows Update, then click
  Check for updates.

After installing the update, kindly restart your device and see if you still get a blue screen error when connecting your HDMI cord.

Connecting laptop running windows 10 to hdtv with hdmi

I'm not very tech savvy.

• I know how to run the HDMI cable between laptop and tv.
• I know how to set my tv to use correct HDMI port.

What I need to know is how I tell my laptop to recognize my tv and configure it to use my tv as a monitor.

Anyone that can tell me step by step how to do this in windows 10?

Thanks for all the help. Hooked up the HDMI cable, plugged tv back in, started laptop up, switched the tv to correct HDMI port and viola...there was my laptop start screen on my tv! Didn't have to do anything but make a few display
adjustments!
