  2. Wired Keyboard and Mouse Stop Working - Windows 10

Wired Keyboard and Mouse Stop Working - Windows 10
I have an old Dell Studio that is running windows 10 ---

Ir has Windows 10 and SSD installed - to me it does what it needs to do but this darn mouse and keyboard stuff stopping working with no rhyme or reason is making me very frustrated.

Keyboard and Mouse are wired - NOT WIRELESS

    • I cannot easily unplug and plug in the mouse/keyboard to get it going again... they are still lit up but they are dead basically and I have to do a hard reset.
    • USB selective suspend is disabled.
    • I checked the drivers for the keyboard and mouse and they are updated.
    • I checked to see if PC has KB4074588 and it does not.

I am not sure what else to do.... I can go days without the issue and then days where anytime I step away from the PC it stops working.

I can say when it is working it just does not just stop ... only when I walk away and the machine is idle or the screen is locked.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Logitech mouse and Keyboard issues

Thank you as well. I have no owned a corded mouse in 15 years or since they had wireless mice. Can I do the steps backwards, meaning do the keyboard first rather than the mouse since I will need a working mouse to do all this?

    PC killing wired mouses.

    Hello dusan jancic,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community!

There can be several reasons why a wired mouse may have problems continuously within a short period of time. Here are some of the possible causes and solutions that can lead to this situation:

Third-party application conflicts or virus infections with the mouse driver can lead to a situation where the wired mouse malfunctions frequently. But the mouse drivers do not cause damage to the mouse hardware.

Therefore you can test whether the damage of the wired mouse occurs on the driver or the hardware.

    Test scenario one:

You can try to test whether your wired mouse works normally on other devices.

    • If the mouse works fine on other devices, it means the mouse driver is damaged.
    • If the mouse does not work properly on other devices, then your device has damaged the mouse hardware.
    Test scenario two:

In this test method, we can try to see if fixing the mouse driver directly can help restore the use of the wired mouse by

Right-click on the Windows icon --- select Device Manager --- expand the "mouse and other pointer devices" --- uninstall the driver here --- scanning to detect hardware changes, the computer will automatically install the default driver. Test again after completion.

Or you can uninstall the mouse driver in the device manager, visit your laptop manufacturer's official website, download and install the latest mouse driver. Reboot the device after completing the installation to see how it goes.

    • If reinstalling the driver doesn't help, then it's likely that your wired mouse hardware is damaged.
    • If reinstalling the driver temporarily restores the wired mouse to use, then it indicates that the cause of the problem is a corrupted driver.

Through the above test program, I believe you can already determine whether the problem occurs on the mouse hardware or the driver.

If the problem occurs on the driver:

I recommend trying a clean boot which starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It can be used to determine whether a background service or program is interfering or causing a problem.

These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by-step.

If the mouse hardware is damaged:

It may be due to a faulty computer port, or a static electricity problem that is causing the mouse to have a damaged interface or circuit problem. Then you may need to have a professional technician check your computer hardware for problems.

Hope this helps so that your wired mouse can work properly, please feel free to reply me if anything is unclear or if there are any further updates, thanks.

    Best Regards ,
