    Laptop doesn't recognize headphones unless plugged in a very specific position.


    This is an HP laptop with Windows 11 Home.As of yesterday my laptop doesn't seem to recognize when any sort of headphones are plugged in unless I twist the jack in a certain way. If it isn't, sound continues to go through the speakers and it won't even show up in my settings. All my audio drivers are updated as well as my system, and when plugged in my headphones are recognized as a default device when not recognized the speaker is shown to be the default. I've yet to delete and re-install the drivers since I've had bad luck with trying to fix problems on my own, is there something else I ca

    Headphones Not Recognized as Plugged In

    I installed the Conexant driver from the manufacturer's website and ran in compatibility mode for Windows 8. Still the same problem; headphone jack is not recognized at all.

    Windows 10 HD audio driver still lists headphones as a playback device, but their status is always "not plugged in" even if they are plugged in.

    This is a new laptop (just bought last month from the Microsoft store) and came preinstalled with Windows 10.

    Typical Case:

    When I plug my new headphones into my laptop (Windows 10), they are not recognized. If I play a sound it comes through the speakers. I have tried going into audio devices. An option for headphones is listed and enabled, but shows as disconnected.

    Other computers:

    The headphones work normally in my desktop and Surface Go (both Windows 10). For my desktop, when I plug the headphones in, I get a message asking what I have plugged in. I can switch between headphones and speaker by clicking on the speaker icon and using
    the up arrow to see both choices

    Weird Case:

    If I have my headphones plugged in when I restart my laptop - THEY WORK. Until I unplug them, then only the speaker works. Until I again restart the computer with the headphones plugged in

    What is going on?
