Laptop dying when plugging in external hard drive + unknown reason

Hi there,I received a second-hand intel core i7 laptop recently and it has now died for the third time.By this I mean that it refuses to turn on, providing no signs that it's even plugged in and powered. The first and third times this has occurred was when I plugged in my external hard drive to the slot closest to the power. It just died with no fanfare, no BSOD, just straight to a black screen where it then refuses to turn on again. There is no light next to the power cable when it dies. The second time it died was for an unknown cause - it just refused to turn on one morning. The first and seco

  2. Computer freezes and Explorer doen't respond when I plug an external Hard drive

    Hello jobkakule,

The issue is possibly caused by corrupted data or bad sectors on your external hard drive or could be a sign of a failing hard drive.

To better assist you with your concern, I'd like to know the following:

    • Confirm which build is currently installed on your device. To check, follow the steps below:
    1. Press Windows key + R, then type in winver.
    2. Click OK.
    • Have you tried plugging your external hard drive to a different USB port? Also, check if you can access the drive by plugging it to a different computer.
    • What is the make and model of your computer?

Meanwhile, I'd suggest to repair the bad sectors on your external hard drive. Kindly refer to the steps below:

(Let's just assume that the drive letter for your external hard drive is E. If not, please do change it to the correct drive letter)

    1. Plug in your external hard drive. Click on Start, search for
Command Prompt, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.

    2. Type in the following command below and press Enter after each command:

    Chkdsk /f E:

    Chkdsk /r E:

    3. Reboot your computer after the scan is completed.

    Looking forward to your response.

    Regards.

  3. External hard drive not showing up on Windows 10 Laptop or computer. External hard drive not responding ...??

    Hello Kimberly,

This issue might have occurred due to an outdated USB driver. For us to effectively assist you, we would like to ask a few questions:

    • Could you tell us if there were any changes made on your laptop prior to the issue?
    • Have you tried to update the USB drivers on your laptop? If not, we recommend updating the USB drivers on your laptop and see if it helps. You may refer to the steps provided
here on how to update drivers in Windows 10.
    • Have you tried plugging in the external hard drive using a different computer?

If not, we advise that you try plugging in the external hard drive using a different computer just to isolate the issue.

We're looking forward to your response.

    Seagate External Hard Drive

    Hi Barbara,

Hardware failure or corruption within your system files are some of the possible reasons why you are experiencing an issue with accessing your external hard drive. For us to provide an accurate solution, we would need you to answer the following questions:

    • Which build, version and edition of Windows 10?
    • Are you experiencing the same issue when you are trying to access the external hard drive using another PC?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

In the meantime, we suggest running the automated troubleshooter for hardware. Follow these steps to do so:

    • Open the Control Panel.
    • Using the search box at the upper right corner of the window, type troubleshooting.
    • From the search results, click on Troubleshooting.
    • Click on Hardware and Sound and then choose Hardware and Devices.
    • Once done, restart your computer and then check if the same issue persists.

We are looking forward to your response.
