Windows 10: Laptop failing to update to version 2004.

The first day that the update came out, I went to the windows update to update my computer to 2004. I did it 3 times and all 3 times it failed. The first 2 times it failed, reverted changes, and restarted my computer. The third time it claimed that my laptop updated successfully but in run I did the winner command and found out that I am still on version 1909. I used the Windows Update Assistant to help my laptop update to 2004 and it also failed 3 times. It says that it completed the update and it needed to restart my laptop. When I restart, it shows the Dell symbol with the loading indication at the bottom. It doesn't do the normal blue update screen, instead it just goes straight to lock screen. I want to know if it is just a bug or something because the same thing happened with my younger brother. He thought his laptop updated successfully but his version is still on 1909. Has anyone else experienced this or something similar to whats happening to me? Is there a solution to this? I also tried using Microsoft Support for help with update problems and it also didn't work.

When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.

Tried all the steps listed and result afterwards is the same. Still fails and uninstalls the update. Any other suggestions?

No, there's no special 'precursor', not if your Windows was up to date. It sound like your update to 2004 failed and rolled back while you were out of the room. If you are still on 1909 then the failed update should be listed in its update history. Now that windows update has tried and failed it may be waiting for a while before offering it again.
