    Laptop fan runs really hard when not doing anything


    It’s a brand new HP Omen gaming laptop. The fan runs hard randomly even when not doing anything and CPU temp stays around 55% when nothing is running. Haven’t played games on it yet but I’m guessing it’s going to be a problem when I do if it works this hard at idle. Just wondering if this is normal or if I should return it?

    The ‘fan always on’ option was enabled in BIOS but problem is continuing even after disabling it.

    Hello, I see that you are looking for a way to change the fan. Since you are using a laptop, it will be really hard to actually find the fan that fits your laptop. The fan itself has to be the exactly same fan that you currently have, and manufactures
    usually do not sell laptop parts. This means, it is extremely hard to find the replaceable parts. My suggestion for you is to open up the laptop lid, and blowing away the dust that has been covered up inside the fan and throughout the motherboard. Also, there
    is a program called SpeedFan which allows you to control the fan speed depending on your computer. This program sometimes may not work with selected computers, so I would recommend you installing and seeing if it works.

    • Carefully blow out the dust from all the vents on the sides and underneath.
    • Only use laptops on hard surfaces without any coverings on that surface.
    • If it is a rattle / clicking type noise then it will need a Technician to replace the fan and completely clean out any dust / hair or other debris that may be trapped within the laptops casings and fan assembly.

    Utility for laptop fan control?

    Note that, depending on your laptop, any direct control of the fan may not be possible. I suggested the one above as it seems aimed at laptops in particular- but I've not tried it.

    E.g. Speedfan lists no fan on my Thinkpad.
