Windows 10: Laptop - Intel HD 620 issue - Only external monitor displays

Version 1903 (OS Build 18362.535)

I have been using my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1557) while connected to an external monitor (connected via HDMI using a HDMI to VGA Adapter) for several months now.

When disconnected from the external monitor, the laptop's own monitor would not display, not even in safe mode.
I could see the Dell startup logo, but as soon as Windows started, the screen would go black.

To get the laptop screen to display, I need to disable the Intel HD 620 driver in Device Manager while connected to an external monitor and restart.

I tried removing the devices in device manager and restarting, it starts off well but as soon as windows update installs the Intel HD 620 drivers, the screen goes blank and I need to connect to the external monitor to see what is on screen.

How to fix laptop external HDMI monitor that is detected but blank?

I got a new dell Windows 10 laptop and I am trying to get my external monitor to work with it.

The external monitor has an HDMI input and a VGA input. I was previously using the VGA input with my old Windows 7 laptop. I had never tried the HDMI input on the external monitor until now.

Initially I fiddled with some display driver settings to get the external monitor detected. And then in the display settings I saw the two monitors and I selected dual monitors side by side.

Now whenever I connect the HDMI cable it appears that the external monitor becomes the primary monitor but it remains blank. I can move my mouse over to it and whenever I open any apps from my laptop screen they don't show at all because I am guessing they're displaying on the external monitor that is blank. That brings up another issue - when I connect the external monitor I can't do anything because everything opens on the external. How can I see stuff while the external is connected? Do I have to "guess and drag"?

I have tried two HDMI cables(one from my TV that was working there), so I think the cable itself is fine.

Here are my listed display drivers:

• Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 Version: 21.20.164574 [12/23/2016]
  
• Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 Version: 21.20.164627 [3/9/2017]
  
• Microsoft Basic Display Adapter
  

I had to switch to the basic driver to get the monitor detected. Since then I've tried the others at least once.

• Are you aware of any changes that happened on the computer prior to this issue?
  

This issue could be due to the display setting corruption that only affected the primary display when disconnected from the secondary.



I suggest you to try the steps listed below and check if it works for you:

• Press ‘Win + R’ keys on the keyboard together to open the Run dialog box and type the following into the Run box:
  appwiz.cpl
  
• Uninstall Intel HD Graphics Drivers and exit
  Programs and Features.
  
• Right click the Windows icon on the taskbar and choose
  Device Manager.
  
• Expand Display Adapters and right click on
  Intel HD Graphics Display Driver.
  
• Click on Uninstall and check the box
  Delete the driver software for this device.
  
• With the external monitor connected, reboot the machine.
  
• Once the machine boots into the desktop, disconnect the external monitor and check if the issue persists.

External Monitor Detected but Does not Display

I have a Surface Pro 3 running Windows 10, creators update 1803.

When attempting to connect to an external display (mini DisplayPort to HDMI), Windows detects the monitor but displays no signal.

The extended desktop appears in screenshots, but nothing on the monitor itself.

So far, I have:

• Updated Surface Pro 3 firmware
• Checked for all Windows update
• Tested with multiple monitors (at least 4)
• Tested with multiple cables
• Tested with multiple adaptors
• Updated Intel Graphics 4400 HD driver
• Removed Intel Graphics 4400 HD and reinstalled
• Rebooted more times than I can count

Any advice?
