Windows 10: Laptop Not Outputting to Monitor After Restart

Hi everyone,I have a bit of a weird issue that has been bugging me for some time. I have a laptop that I plug in to an external monitor. I close the lid on the laptop and use only the monitor. The laptop is basically acting as a desktop. If I restart the laptop, once it gets to the login screen, it only displays a blank screen on the monitor. It's not until I lift the laptop lid and close it again, that the external monitor comes back on. I'm guessing the laptop boots back up into 'extend display' mode rather than ignoring the laptop screen and only using the external monitor.Is there a way to

If you're trying to use a wired external monitor is it connected to the laptop's HDMI output connector or the mini DisplayPort connector?

If you're using a wired external monitor and don't see any output, right-click on an empty spot on the Desktop and select Screen Resolution -> Detect

In addition, you may need to press the F7 key and select the mode in which the display will function. There are 4 modes:

• Disconnect (or Computer only): display only on the laptop's screen
• Duplicate: the same display on the laptop's screen and the external monitor
• Extend: extends the output so that you can drag things from one screen to the other
• Projector only (or Second Screen Only): displays only on the external monitor

Or are you trying to use wireless (Wi-Di or Miracast)?

 

This pertains to KB4089848, with nagging update installed and to restart computer. Additionally no HDMI audio output to monitor.

I went through like 7 hours of Microsoft troubleshooting, step by step to get this KB4089848 installed. Finally the last step was to re-install Windows 10 with all updates...low and behold it worked with not more nagging step to restart. Updates now shows
all updates are current, then low and behold after months of no audio output to my monitor (had to use a usb speaker standby during meantime to have audio) that started working again. It tooks hours to figure out it was a Windows 10 "software" issue and that
the whole package had to be replaced and restarted.

Works great now.
