Windows 10: Laptop & PC Vanished from Windows 10 Home Network

Windows Version 2OHC I've been limping along the last few months on a partially functional home network. My laptop could see my PC, but my PC couldn't see my laptop. (Also on the network was an old PC running Windows 7 but that's not my concern just now). Here's what my network looked like a couple of months ago from the point of view of the laptop: The Windows 10 machines are my Dell laptop named "Delbert" and my Lenovo PC named "Lenny." (For now I think we can probably just ignore the Windows 7 PC named "Bob") Well today while doing some laptop file folder housekeeping I looked at my network, and both Delbert and Lenny had disappeared: A BBS buddy conjectured that perhaps a Windows 10 update had peremptorily turned on the Windows firewall that I had previously kept turned off on his advice, because he said I could rely on a hardware firewall in my router. So I checked, and sure enough the Windows firewall was turned back on, which I manually turned off again. But that was hours ago, and neither Delbert nor Lenny has reappeared on my network. Oddly though, some third party software can not only see Lenny from Delbert, but can also read and write files on Lenny. For example, a utility I use for backing up files called Allway Sync has no trouble copying files from my laptop to my PC: So the network is accessible and functional via that program. But it's invisible to me in Windows File Explorer. I'd be grateful for some guidance in troubleshooting this problem. Will in Seattle a.k.a. "Clueless"

PC Has Vanished

Some time in the past few months, one of my PC's has vanished from the network. It seems to be an issue with Network Discovery. The PC is accessible if you type in a path from another PC, it is also present in the Homegroup, but it is missing from the list of PC's in Windows Explorer, Network.

Nothing has been changed on the PC and Network Discovery is enabled.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

 

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Laptop won't show list of available networks

We suggest checking the list of available Wi-Fi networks on your laptop.

Please follow these steps:

• Click the Windows logo.
• Go to Settings (gear icon).
• Select Network and Internet.
• Then Wi-Fi.
• Make sure the Wi-Fi radio button is On.
• Select Show available networks, then you'll be able to see the list of available Wi-Fi networks.
