Laptop restarted/rebooted automatically and Microsoft asked to change password

Two days ago, on switching on my Acer laptop running Windows 10, instead of the usual Microsoft sign-in page, a Microsoft Account Recovery page showed up, with some audio recording asking to type in recovery email, etc. However, on verifying the credentials, I could sign in as usual, with the same password as earlier.

However, last night, the laptop froze, flashing the "Just a moment" message. After a few minutes where the screen showed the same message, the Microsoft Account Recovery page showed up again. However, this time, no explanations given, it asked to not only verify the credentials but also reset the Microsoft account password. After following the instructions, I have been using the laptop with the new password as usual.

Another strange thing: while shutting down the laptop after this, a message said that there is someone else using the laptop and their unsaved work might be lost if the laptop is shut down. I do use another laptop (let's call it B) simultaneously with the same Microsoft account. And a few days ago, laptop B showed some messages about either Microsoft or Windows issues on it (I can't remember what exactly, probably something to do with some missing updates or registry).

Why could this have happened? What do I do?

    Thanks a lot in advance!

forgot then changed Microsoft account password

    Hi,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

I would suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

    • Try disconnecting the cable from the Internet:
      • If there is a Wi-Fi icon on the sign-in screen, click it and go to Airplane mode.
      • If there is a wired connection, disconnect the wire.
      • If sign-in is successful, let us know in the comments!
      • Also, we can then change to a local account, restart, and re-connect to the MSA.
      • If this works, please let us know!
    2. Try sign-in on another device (phone or PC) via the
    https://account.microsoft.com
    page.

    • If the sign-in is unsuccessful, stop and handle it like any other password issue.
    • If sign-in is successful there, don’t try resetting/changing the password, continue to the next step.
    3. Try using the On-Screen Keyboard to sign in on the PC.

    4. If that fails, make sure the PC is connected to the Internet (the connection icon should be visible in the lower right).

    Thank you.
