Windows 10: laptop runs at 100% disk

I purchased a Lenovo laptop 6 weeks ago from a reputable local retailer. I was traveling and started using the laptop after my return, which unfortunately was after the 30 day return policy. The laptop runs at 100% disk at start up and continues for some time, making it useless to use. After waking up it does the same thing. I've seen plenty of online posts describing the same problem with suggestions for a fix, nothing that's worked. I'm not asking for a fix just pointing out what a disaster this problem is, so much so that it just sits there while I use my wife's Mac Book...if you can imagine.

Hi all,

I have just bought a Lenovo laptop and it has been running extremely slowly i think due to the disk running constantly at 100%, even when there are no other programs or applications apparently running.

The laptop has an Intel i7-7500, 12 GB of RAM and is running Windows 10 Home 64-bit. I have Kaspersky Internet Security installed and up to date.

It seems like System Host: Local System (18) is taking up the majority of the disk speed, the drop down reveals the following tasks running; Windows Update, Windows Push Notifications System Service, Windows Management Instrumentation, Update Orchestrator
Service for Windows Update, User Manager, Themes, Shell Hardware Detection, System Event Notification Service, Task Scheduler, User Profile Service, Geolocation Service, Server, IP Helper, IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules, Delivery Optimisation, Computer
Browser, Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Application Information.

Apologies for the long list, I just want to make sure to give the most information.

I would be greatful for any tips or suggestions that anyone may have.

We would like to isoalte this issue that you're having right now.
It could be that the page file is set by the system defferently. Let's try to customize it according to what Widnows 10 will recommend:

1. In Search tab of the Start menu, type "Adjust the appearance and performance of windows" and press
Enter

2. Go to Advanced tab and click Change ... button in the Virtual memory section.

3. At the top, uncheck the box right before "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" option.

4. Select drive C: (or the drive where Windows 10 is installed).

5. Select Custom size: by ticking its radio button, and change the
Initial size (MB) and Maximum size (MB) to the
Recommended value that you will find just below the Total paging file size for all drivers section.

Open the Resource Monitor in task manager to try and identify the executable that is causing the high usage condition:





Once identified, take a screenshot and post back for additional assistance if necessary.

That is not the correct view:

Open task manager> click on the performance tab> at the bottom click on resource monitor>click the disk tab and expand the processes with disk activity and the disk activity view.

It should look exactly like the screenshot I provided.

 

You also might want to include a snapshot of your startup tab to see what can be disabled there as well:

If you can believe it the disk usage dropped to 5% very quickly this time, but not the norm.

When the screen shot above was taken it was running 100% disk though.

 

Ok, I see a few processes that may be hogging the disk; however, I really need the screenshot showing "Disk Activity."

 

WOT, sorry, have I not provided the Disk Activity? Please see above.

 

OK, looking at your startup tab and the performance monitor view you provided, it looks like the Intel delayed launcher was quite active at the time of your screenshot. This is an added security program that allows you into your computer's operating system before any system files can be accessed by virus/malware. It is intended to prevent virus attacks that might load during boot. I have no such option on my Lenovo IdeaPad 110-115ISK. You can try disabling it in task manager startup for a test and then re-enable it if you feel it is necessary.

In fact, you might want to try disabling others things as well. Now, disabling them doesn't mean they won't work if you launch them, they just might startup a bit slower than if you had them enabled.

If you look at my screenshot, I have the Conexant and Smart Audio disabled.

However, I don't see any startup entry for Defender or an Anti-virus program? So what are you using because that cannot be disabled. And why do you have an HP program starting on your Lenovo laptop?

 

You provided processes with disk activity but you did not provide the disk activity. Take a close look at my screenshot. I think the problem is the disk activity ran off your screenshot so you can take another with just the disk activity showing:





Sort it by write activity before taking a screenshot.

I have an HP printer attached, so that must be it.

I have McAfee Total Protection installed. I do remember disabling it right after startup to see if that would help but nada.

There are a number of things that have been suggested online like disabling Superfetch and other things, nothing that's worked.

I'll try the things you suggest and reply later.
