Laptop seems to be running hotter since update from 8.1 & long login

    Hi all,

I finally bit the bullet and upgraded my Acer Aspire V5-571 laptop from 8.1 to 10 yesterday.

For the most part things seem OK, but there are a couple of issues I hope someone could advise me on.

First off, the laptop seems to be running hotter (and therefore louder fans) since the update. My temps seem to be in the 60s a lot, rather than the 40s-50s before, under normal load.

Also, log in seems to take ages. On 8.1 I'd enter my password and it'd be at the Start Screen a few seconds later. When entering my password now, first it stays on the login screen for a while, and even then when it gets to the desktop, the wallpaper shows but no desktop icons, and the taskbar shows but as a blank bar. Then the items on it (start button, icons etc) start appearing slowly.

It's not my startup entries because I have hardly any.

    Any ideas on these issues?

    Thanks for any advice *Smile

    :)

  2. Windows 10 memory issues

Since upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 my laptop seems not to have enough memory to run videos or long web pages like Facebook on Edge or IE 11. I'm now using Google Chrome to view the pages and it works fine. When is Microsoft going to fix the
    memory alocation/usage issues?

  3. Windows Phone 8.1 update 1 Dev Preview - random reboots

I'm on a Nokia Lumia 925 with cyan and dev preview of wp 8.1 update 1.

Since I got the dev preview of update 1, my phone has had several random reboots ( fist it will freeze with a reboot after that ).

It's not app related I think because I had it while being in the SMS, Twitter and Facebook app.

The phone also seems somewhat hotter when this happens.

    Hello,

This could be a driver problem and one of the MB or system component drivers needs an update for W10. It would be worth checking the Acer website for any W10 driver updates they recommend for your laptop.

Something is using more CPU time that it should be. It would be worth looking at Task Manager to see what is causing your CPU to run a lot.

My experience is that there are more background tasks running in W10 than in W8 and this can depend on what you have set up such as Cortana, windows indexing, etc. There are a few threads on here related to reducing the number of running processes in W10 that would be worth looking up.

This tutorial would be a good start: Optimize Performance of Windows 10

    Thanks for the reply Phil.

Unfortunately my laptop is, for some reason, not on Acer's "Supported list", meaning they will not be releasing any drivers for it. It seems odd because there are older models on the supported list.

Anyway, the laptop is Intel based and I downloaded the Intel Driver Update Utility program. This scans the system and it has found an update, but I am not sure if this particular update would make any difference:

Would you recommend installing it, as it just seems like an INF update rather than any actual drivers?

On the subject of laptops getting hot, I was thinking about blowing some compressed air into the side vent of the laptop, but I don't know if this is good or bad for it. Any opinions?

    Thanks

Hi, only use driver scanners if you have no other recourse. Uncle MS maintains most drivers on Win 10, and will replace anything newer or older if different to his list.

I've seen reports of other laptops listed as unsupported with this problem, but please post a screenshot of your task manager organised by highest CPU use topmost.

Typical other issues include probems with Defender and indexing, System and Compressed Memory e.g.

Note you have 30 days to roll back, unless you wisely created a disk image before upgrading.
