Windows 10: Laptop using inbuilt microphone instead of the one thats plugged in.

I bought a microphone and i want to use it with my laptop.

When i plug it in the audio jack (headphone/mic combo) it detects the microphone as headphones and when i try to record something it still uses the inbuilt microphone and not the one i plugged in.

Is there a way for the laptop to FORCE grab audio from the audio jack or to disable the inbuilt microphone?

Realtek inbuilt microphone

My inbuilt Realtek microphone doesn't work. I've updated all the drivers and have checked that the microphone is not mute but it still wont work

inbuilt microphone not working Windows 10

A week ago I upgrade my Toshiba L40T-B833 laptop(windows 8.1) to Windows 10. After the upgrade inbuilt microphone isn't working. It is listed under the Recording options of the sound panel as being enabled but it does not seem to be picking up any sound
at all. I have followed all the advice I can find online but it has not solved the problem and whilst people back home can see me, they can not hear me.
