Laptop wakes up Desktop from sleep when I turn it on (suspect WOL).

Both my laptop and PC run Windows 10 1909 (build 18363.720) currently but I've had this issue for over a year that I've noticed, I'm finally annoyed enough by it to ask for help. Searching online seems to yield a lot of duff results.

I know what happens at any rate, I'd just like to know why and if I can stop it without turning off WOL: My desktop will be in sleep mode (not hibernate). When I turn on the laptop from being shut down, or wake it from sleep the desktop will wake up from sleep as well. I have several computers on the network but only these two are running Windows 10 (the others are either Linux or Mac) - All my computers support Wake on LAN, but only the laptop wakes the other Win10 computer, nothing else. This does not work vice versa - ie the desktop won't wake up the laptop if it is sleeping, though I suspect that is because my laptop is connected wirelessly to my router where as the desktop is connected via ethernet.

I guess it's setting related to WOL on the laptop or the desktop (or both) causing the problem - I am assuming that when the laptop is turned on or woken from sleep it scans the network and "sees" the sleeping network connection for my desktop and sends some kind of data packet to it. Obviously the desktop sees it as a WOL request and wakes up.

Ultimately I either want to stop the laptop from doing this or get the desktop to ignore the requests, however, I cannot turn WOL off completely on the desktop at least as I do use it often to wake the computer myself so I can access files and such.

    :)

Laptop updated to 1809. Can't get WOL to send out...

Not sure the topic is exactly accurate. Here's the story:

    • Have been successful sending WOL to 2 other PCs in the house
    • Had problems with laptop and sent to HP. They upgraded it to 1809
    • Now when I send WOL packets the other PCs will not wake up

Given that it was working fine on those PCs before, and the noted changes are to the PC sending the packet, I'm assuming that my sending PC needs something configured.

My searches on WOL only find stuff about setting it up on the remote PC so it will wake up.

Any suggestions about why my sending PC is not sending?

  3. laptop in same homegroup wakes desktop from sleep

    Hi,

After I put my windows 10 desktop to sleep, if I turn on a laptop in the same homegroup it wakes the desktop from sleep.

    Any advice?

    Thanks

    WOL Stopped Working

My wife has a Packard Bell TJ68 laptop previously running Windows 7. I have a NAS which normally sleeps and the laptop send WOL packets to wake up the NAS when a user logs on.

When I upgraded to Windows 10 the sending of the WOL packets no longer works. It makes no difference whether I connect up a wired connection or use the wireless. I have tried from the commandline (Wolcmd) and various utilities.

I know WOL is working because a Linux Netbook wakes the NAS successfully as does my Windows 7 desktop.

It then dawned on me that maybe the identical problem with my sons Windows 8 HP laptop, which I had put down to different hardware (and he's had to live with) is actually related to Windows 8/10 not the hardware.

I've had windows update look for drivers but the fact that wired or wireless, two machines, neither work says that it's not drivers.

If I can't find a solution I'll have to go back to Windows 7. Just to be clear this is NOT a problem using WOL to wake up the laptop, this is the laptop failing to send WOL packets after upgrading to Windows 10.
