    last windows update freeze pc

    Greetings
    I'm in winver 1709 build 16299.192
last update was most probably "cummulative update for windows 10 for x64-based systems KB4074588"
It generated the famous shield on taskbar which I couldnt delete or terminate (from list of tasks) as administrator and until I answered this unseen shield (which was most probably a Microsoft question if I allow a certain action) I couldn't run anything not even on my quick launch.
How do I get rid of it?
    please help
    thank you

p.s. meanwhile I paused all update. I can work now since I restored my system to Feb. 1
but I'd like to go on and receive windows updates and work

    :)

Last update makes my pc freeze

so it seems that a system restore may have fixed the problem but i'm not 100% of that yet.

i will keep your reply in mind if it happens again.

    thanks

Hi, if a particular update is causing you difficulty, you can 'hide' that update (so it is not applied). (Just as used to be done more readily in Win 7).
You could also set updates to Notify so they are no automatically applied.

Try Windows Update Minitool (free) for a convenient way to do this. (It uses registry settings otherwise used by e.g. the Group Policy Editor in Pro editions).

Also note there is a thread per update per build in the News section so you might like to read that.

Thank you for your prompt answer.
The point is that I want to receive all updates and I wonder what causes this freezing why I can't see the shield contents (only its icon in the taskbar)
I'm quite sure that Microsoft is asking me if I agree that some program will make changes. But which?

I will follow your advice and try the windows updates minitool (never had to use it in windows 7)
    thanks again
    waiting for more answers

I'm sorry, I have no idea what 'the famous shield on taskbar which I couldn't delete or terminate' is...

Hiding 1 update will permit you to receive more.

Have you looked at the News thread on this update?

  7. Your "My Computer" specs say you are using W8.1 as your OS.

Which version of W10 are you using (Home, Pro, other)?

Please use the Microsoft snipping tool or fn+prt sc with paint to post an image into the thread of the problem that you are experiencing.

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    1) sfc /scannow
    2) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    3) chkdsk /scan
    4) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    5) msconfig (in the pop up system configuration > move the dot from normal startup to selective startup > uncheck load startup items > click service tab > in left lower corner check hide all Microsoft services > in the lower right side click disable all > click apply or ok > do not reboot)

    6) taskmgr (in the pop up task manager > click on the start up tab > click on status so that the column sorts with enable rising to the top > right click on each row with enable and change to disable)

How to perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 - TechNet Articles - United States (English) - TechNet Wiki

    7) shutdown /r (you will reboot the computer so that it is in clean boot)

    8) Evaluate the performance on your computer in clean boot during typical use.
    a) Are the boots faster or slower?
    b) Are the shutdowns faster or slower?
    c) How has the video performance changed? Is it better, worse, or the same?
    d) How have the hangs and freezes changed? Are they better, worse, or the same?
    e) Continue using clean boot indefinitely to monitor performance.

I find it hard to believe that windows update can cause damage or be in conflict with any of the installed programs.
I intend to neutralize few programs that load on start and maybe prevent me from reading Microsoft message.
The main point is that I went back in time (using Acronis True Image) so everything was OK before and I didn't have new installations in the last two weeks. but I replaced my 30 years old keyboard and upon touching the new keyboard somewhere I shouldn't I lost colors and I couldn't get them back using personalization or graphic properties.
I went back to Feb. 1 and regained colors
but "new" windows update that I already got before caused freezing of pc.
Then when it first appeared I solved it by finding few versions of the same program that didn't work together.
Now I have only one version.
    Will report after my trial
    Thank you all.
Special thanks to zbook who gave a very detailed answer.
I don't have any problems with sfc or cleanup or chkdsk
don't know what is dism but will look it up
I have a detailed list of process & services and nothing changed
will try to follow the rest of your advices

I've not heard of conflicts between installed programs and updates, but that can certainly be a problem with upgrades.

A typical case would be security programs which can cause the upgrade to fail; certain programs need to be updated when an upgrade is applied.

glad to announce that it was not
    KB4074588 (OS Build 16299.248)

so now it can be an update for video playback which I certainly don't need (KB4041994)
or a malicious software removal tool (KB890830)
but now after cleaning and backup I'm ready for it

well few days passed and I still live
so I guess my problem is partially solved until next update
Thank you Dalchina for teaching me how to hide an update that I don't want.
I still miss a security update KB890830 which failed

You're welcome. It's unfortunate MS doesn't make this easier, but they seem to be stuck on the remorseless idea that all updates and upgrades are good for you, to be applied at their behest by default. (And of course they shouldn't cause anyone any problems, should they).

  14. He/she did not learn of Windows Update MInitool on his/her own. He/she learned that from me, step by step. See here for proof - he/she even asks me questions on how it works - Cumulative Update KB4056892 Windows 10 v1709 Build 16299.192 - Page 37 - Windows 10 Forums (next post down from this is from him/her)

He/she has recommended this to many people without giving the credit to whom credit is due (me!)

Shows a lack of character to plagiarize - in this case, to copy from someone (me) & pass it on as one's own (Dalchina)

BTW, you are welcome that my suggestion helped put the power of installing updates into your hands rather than at the whim of MS!
