    Audio and Video Tearing - High DPC Latency in LatencyMon

    Hi, if you search tenforums for Latencymon, for example, you will find other threads which might suggest a way forward.

    Diagnosing this problem is not straightforward.

    One approach is to simplify hardware as much as possible, another to use a somewhat daunting tool from MS, the Windows Performance Recorder (tutorial available).

    Similarly if you search tenforums for references to this you will see some example screenshots.

    Audio and Video Tearing - High DPC Latency in LatencyMon

    I'm having some audio and video issues. They're most prevalent while playing games (Warhammer 2 and ESO, mainly) and the issues cause the games to stutter, drop FPS, and the audio becomes corrupted. This also occurs when starting the PC. The audio is corrupted and the mouse cursor jumps a bit.

    I'm not sure what I need to post for you to investigate these issues, but let me know and I'll do it.

    I noticed, however, dxgkrnl.sys and storport.sys have extraordinarily high DPC latency in LatencyMon.

    This is what I've done so far to fix these issues:

    * sfc/scannow
    * healthcheck
    * updated my audio driver
    * used DDU in safemode and updated my GPU driver
    * updated my chipset
    * reset my pc

    The following is what I see in LatencyMon. The spikes happen randomly and result in the torn audio and video issues.

    I'm lost and I have no idea what to do now. Thanks in advance.

    Recommendation on how to lower Latency with LatencyMon

    Dear BrentHarmon1

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

    I understand that you would like information on how to reduce system latency.

    System latency can be affected by a variety of factors that can cause delays in response time in a computer system. The following are some of the main factors associated with system latency:

    1. Hardware performance: the performance of computer hardware is a key factor. the performance of the CPU, memory, hard drives (especially solid state drives), and graphics cards can all affect the response time of a system. Higher-performance hardware is usually able to process tasks faster, resulting in lower latency.
    2. Drivers: The quality and efficiency of device drivers is critical to system latency. Poor or outdated drivers can cause latency issues. Therefore, make sure your hardware drivers are up-to-date and well optimised.
    3. Background processes and applications: Processes and applications running in the background of the system may take up computer resources and cause latency. Closing unnecessary background processes and applications can reduce the burden on your system.
    4. Operating system optimisation: Operating system settings and optimisation can also affect system latency. Performance can be improved by adjusting operating system settings, such as turning off unnecessary special effects and adjusting power schedules and services.
    5. Network connection: For network-related applications, the speed and stability of the network connection can affect response time. Faster Internet connections and low latency networks can improve online

    Therefore, without upgrading your computer hardware, you can try the following methods to minimise system latency.

    1. Update Drivers: Ensure that all your hardware drivers are up to date, including your graphics card, audio interface, network card, and chipset drivers. Outdated drivers can contribute to high latency.
    2. Disable Power-saving Features: In your computer's power settings, set it to High Performance mode. This will prevent your system from entering power-saving states that can introduce latency.
    3. BIOS Settings: Check your motherboard's BIOS settings for any power-saving or CPU throttling options and disable them if necessary. These settings can impact system performance.

      Disclaimer: Microsoft provides no assurances and/or warranties, implied or otherwise, and is not responsible for the information you receive from the third-party linked sites or any support related to technology.

      If you are going to modify BIOS Settings, please back up all your personal files first to ensure you do not lose data.
    4. Background Processes: Close unnecessary background processes and applications that are not essential for your task. This includes applications like web browsers, file sync services, and software updaters.
    5. Disable Wi-Fi or Network Activity: If you're not using network-dependent applications, consider temporarily disabling Wi-Fi or unplugging the Ethernet cable to reduce network-related latency.
    6. Optimize Audio Settings: If you're dealing with audio latency, adjust your audio settings. Lowering the sample rate and increasing buffer size can reduce audio dropouts but may increase latency slightly.
    7. Disable C-States in BIOS: Some CPUs have C-states, which are power-saving features. Disabling these in your BIOS can reduce latency.
    8. Update BIOS: Ensure that you're using the latest BIOS version for your motherboard, as manufacturers often release updates that can improve system stability and performance.
    9. Check for Malware: Perform a thorough malware scan to make sure your system isn't compromised, as malware can cause unexpected spikes in latency.
    10. Adjust Windows Services: Be cautious when disabling Windows services, as some are critical for system stability. Tools like "Black Viper's Windows Service Configurations" can guide you in optimizing Windows services safely.
    11. Reduce Graphics Settings: Lowering graphics settings in games or resource-intensive applications can reduce CPU and GPU load, potentially reducing latency.
    12. Use a Latency-Optimized Audio Interface: If you're working with audio, invest in an audio interface with low-latency drivers and ASIO support. These interfaces are designed for real-time audio tasks.
    13. Monitor LatencyMon: Continuously monitor LatencyMon and observe which drivers or processes are causing spikes in latency. This can help you pinpoint specific issues.

    I hope you find the above information helpful, if my description does not match your reality or if you have questions please let me know in a reply.

    Thanks for your patience and understanding!
