Overnight my computer installed the latest Windows insider preview.

Now this morning, there is no response from any of the USB ports. They work in BIOS, but the moment the operating system begins to load they stop responding.

This has been an issue off and on for the last two years according to the message boards here, and yet it is still happening. I do respectfully request that no one, especially a Microsoft support person, post any solution that requires navigating within the OS. It is impossible to click on anything, and it is impossible to select any menu or any choice within the OS .

In the past, when this happened in Windows as far back as 95, you could boot into safe mode and fix things. Now that option is removed unless you are already in the OS. As you can see, if you can't operate within the OS because USB is not recognized, it's impossible to choose a safe mode boot.

In the past, I could usually try restarting 10 or 12 times, and eventually the situation would be fixed. That is no longer the case. The USB ports just do not respond.

Short of buying an appropriate card and using an older style connection keyboard, is there any other possible solution that you can think of? When USB is the way that _every_ HID interacts with the OS, it seems a terrible idea to completely kill that access.

    Thanks!

    :)

  3. Latest Windows Update Killed My USB Ports

    Hi

Sorry for the inconvenience. Try the steps below and let me know if it works.

Step 1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog

Step 2. Type regedit and press Enter

Step 3. Navigate to the following path:

    HKEY_LOCAL_Machine > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > USB

Step 4. If the USB key does not exist into the list, then create a new key USB under Services. Now create a new DWORD value under the key that you’ve just created

Step 5. Keep the USB key selected and right-click on the blank space at the right pane

Step 6. Select New > DWORD value from the context menu

Step 7.Rename this newly created DWORD value as DisableSelectiveSuspend

Step 8. Right-click on DisableSelectiveSuspend and select Modify

Step 9. Put 1 in Value data field and then click OK

    Step 10. Reboot your PC

If not, then next step is to perform a repair upgrade. A repair upgrade reinstalls Windows 10, but keeps your apps and files.
