  2. Create a new Windows profile with the same rights, and install or update a few apps.
Restart the computer, then login with that same profile.
Does your Windows store still show that 'phantom' app update indication?

  3. As my previous post detailed, I too suffered from that phantom 'app update' indicator.
During my last troubleshooting steps (due to reading another thread here somewhere about the same issue), I started really thinking that this was somehow Windows profile related.
Apparently, my additional steps have shown now that it's not actually profile related for me - it was in fact, Windows store related, BUT also had to do with my profile.

Here's what I did to fix mine:
    • Close your Windows Store
    • Create a new Windows profile (this will be temporary, only to 'fix' this update cache issue).
    • Make sure that you assign the same rights to the new profile (administrator).
    • Log out of your original profile.
    • Log into Windows 10 with your newly created 'test' profile.
    • After the profile finishes completely, then open the Windows 10 Store.
    • Login with the same Microsoft account (the account you were logged into the store with in your other profile).
    • Perform a "Get Updates" and allow it to finish to completion.
    • Close the Windows store, then reopen and perform another scan for updates.
    • If nothing comes up and no phantom icon - close the store.
    • Log out of the 'test' profile
    • Log into Windows with your original profile.

Observe that you no longer have that "phantom" update available icon.

I've observed during my working on some domain joined machines, that for whatever reason, a particular part of the Windows profile is missing a value which is associated with the Windows store, or an app in the Windows store, or a cache setting. For whatever reason, this 'setting' never resets, and therefore, it continues to think that there is an update available. By running that Windows store with the same account but in a new profile, the store account appears to get that cached data cleared again & when the original profile opens the store again, it no longer sees an update.

I haven't figured out whether this was from a specific app, or the store itself, but nonetheless, this fix worked for me. Please do leave comments, as I'm always interested in seeing new crap from Microsoft's QA misses.
    Thanks!

Glad this appears to have worked for you, but since this is impacting both Windows 10 Desktop and Windows 10 Mobile, the fix is not applicable to all.

  6. And did you actually create a brand new profile as I detailed in the steps, or did you use an already existing other windows profile? I'm asking this because the issue may have been already happening for all already existing profiles, but is not repeating itself with new Windows profiles.

I've actually run into this kind of thing when dealing with 'folder redirection' and group policies (although it's a completely different issue) - the similarity has more to do with a registry hive that doesn't get properly changed the way it's "supposed" to for whatever reason.

For example, lets say a new group policy gets applied to user accounts on a domain. Each computer, after it logs in under an already established user account, gets 'pushed' the group policies of servers. Windows store works a bit like that, however, it associates itself with the Microsoft account being used to login to the store. BUT, if the Windows profile on the computer has an issue associated with it, it can prevent things from being properly changed or adjusted - in this case, the cache of the Windows store (or something indicative from the Windows store) is not being properly refreshed - so the store 'thinks' that there is still an update to apply, etc.

So, my point is, that sometimes, already established and existing windows profiles other than the one you're using would not be a proper test imo. My method worked for me by actually creating a brand new windows profile, then logging in with it, then logging into the Windows store. If you're already done that, then there must be another issue, and it is most definitely being reported somewhere in the event viewer. Has your event viewer reported any errors or warnings in the path I listed?
I'm very curious about the details, since all of this helps me help myself and my clients as well.
    Thanks!

Something called "Store Experience Host" just downloaded from the Windows Store and now my phantom "1" has disappeared. Did not have a name when it was downloading but found it in Event Viewer. Tried googling it and found no results. Have no idea what it is but it appears to have solved the issue.

That's not a new issue, that seems to be the fix.

    *Wink

I had that update on both my pc and phone and for the first time since a while the number of downloads in the queue actually matched the number of available updates. I'll monitor it the next couple of days, but I'm hopeful.

  14. I've been very busy with an Exchange migration, so I haven't had the time to contribute until now about this.
A few days after my issue appeared to be 'fixed,' I started seeing a new Windows store update named 'app unknown' which appeared anytime I attempted to scan for updates.
The funnier part of this now is that although I don't get the 'phantom' icon indicator showing an additional update is there which shows nothing, this time there is an app there named 'app unknown.'
I spoke with another one of my colleagues and he explained that sometimes there are also licensing entries in the registry which are supposed to conform to applications installed by the Windows store as well, but didn't know which specific hives are connected.
He did however provide me with his fix, which was to:
Run the troubleshooter for Windows apps

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-ph/...r-windows-apps

So, I ran it, and once again, my Windows store appears to be 'fixed' for now. I no longer have that 'phantom' update icon, and I no longer see an 'unknown' app in my update list.
Try that link above & let me know if that works.
NOTE: After downloading the file, right click on it, select properties, then UNBLOCK the file. Then right-click and run as administrator.
    Thanks!
