  1. Latest update broke external drive - Need to reinstall Windows 10

My machine updated to latest update KB4462919, and when rebooted, my external drive was no longer recognised! I've tried restoring a previous system image, but I'm still having issues.

The disk management originally showed the drive as RAW and prompted a format! I managed to recover my files using some recovery software, but the drive is causing a huge problem. No matter what USB port it is now plugged into, the PC becomes extremely slow, takes an age to start and close down. When plugged in I can't even display Disk Management anymore. As soon as I unplug the drive the PC works fine and Disk management displays again! Other USB devices work fine, so there appears to be some weird software conflict going on.

I've decided to reinstall Windows, but I'm now even having trouble doing that!

On installing Windows, I get to the part where I'm prompted to chose a drive, but then get the following error -

Windows cannot be installed to this Disk. The selected Disk has an MBR Partition Table. On EFI systems Windows can only be installed to GPT Disks

I've tried Shift + F10 to bring up CMD during the install, so I can convert to GPT, but that does nothing, and CMD fails to appear!

When I get to the part of chosing drive to install Windows on, it lists my SSD drive for the OS as follows -

Drive 0 Partition 1 System Reserved 500MB System

    Drive 0 Partition 2 111.3GB Primary

If I delete these two partitions, will the drive still show, so I can reformat and install, and then choose GPT? Or is it going to be way more complicated than that?

    I hope someone can advise.

    Myles

    :)

unrecognised external hard drive on Windows 10

    Hi,

Your External Hard Drive might not have been configured correctly on your Windows 10 PC.

We suggest that you update the device driver. You can do that by following these steps:

    • Select the Start button, type Device Manager, and select
it from the list of results.

    • Expand the category where your device is located (Disk Drives), then right-click on the name of your device, and select Update Driver Software.

    • Select Search automatically for updated driver software.

If Windows doesn't find a new driver, you can try looking for one on the device manufacturer's website and follow their instructions.

If updating the device driver doesn't work, we suggest that you reinstall the driver:

    • Open Device Manager.

    • Right-click on the name of the device.

    • Select Uninstall.

    • Restart your PC and Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

Let us know how it goes.

    Regards.

  3. External drive

    Hi Richard,

There are several factors that can cause your external drive to not read DVDs even though the system is recognizing the device. This could be caused by a driver that needs to updated or corrupted files. For us to resolve your concern, kindly answer the questions
    below:

    • Just to confirm, the device that is not working properly is a external DVD optical drive?
    • Were there any recent changes or updates installed on your computer?
    • Have you tried to plug the external drive to a different port on your computer?

As a initial recommendation, we suggest that your run the built in troubleshooter in Windows 10. Kindly refer to the steps below:

    • Type “Troubleshooting” in the Search bar and press Enter.
    • Click on “View All” in the top left corner.
    • This will display the list of troubleshooters which are built-in in the computer. You can click on
Hardware and Devices from the list and you can run the troubleshooter.

This will check for common errors that affect hardware on your computer and attempts to correct them.

We look forward to your response after completing the steps.
