Latest Win 10 update did not install hung up my computer

I got a notification that the version of Win10 needed to be upgraded because the version I had was expiring. The update was already downloaded, So I clicked ok and my computer restarted -- not really. It said it might take some time so I went about other things and came back 4 hours later expecting a functioning machine. OOPS. The screen was black and the machine appeared to be in hibernation so I pressed the button to wake it up. Nothing. Tried moving my mouse or pressing enter on my keyboard as they sometimes will wake it up. Still nothing. Did a cold reboot. It appeared to try to install again with the same result. Now I'm worried as there is no way to get to safe mode to try to undo the update. I was figuring I now had a doorstop thanks to MicroSoft. I did one more cold reboot and a message came up that the update was being uninstalled. Kept my fingers crossed and it was successful. Now I am again getting the same message and am concerned I will have the same issue and am afraid I won't be so lucky this time. I could be overcautious, but want to know what the heck happened and is it going to happen again. The update is again downloaded and is going to install the next time I restart my computer or when the update app restarts it for me. I checked my update history and it indicates a failed install on 10/6/2020 of the same update. So here are my vitals

    Win 10 x64 Ver 1903 Build18362.1082

Feature Update to Win 10 Version 1903 was successfully installed 11/16/2019

The update that failed and is again pending is: Feature update Win 10 Version 2004

Last Update failed 10/6/2020 I wasn't present when it tried to update on 10/6 which is reassuring as my computer was still running

What I don't understand is why it is trying to install a Feature update for Win 10 ver 2004 when I have Win 10 ver 1903? I have scheduled the install til 10/18/2020 so I have time to find out if I have a serious problem or not, and to find out if there is a way to get this to install correctly.

    :)
