Latest Windows 10 upgrade brings 10gbe speed to its knees

A previously fine speed of a 10 GBE network connection dropped precipitously after the Windows machine was brought to Windows 10 Pro, Version 2004, OS build 19041.610. Extensive tests rule out any hardware problems. An older version of Windows 10 delivers acceptable results. Still not as good as Linux-Linux on the same hardware, but more than three times better than what the latest Windows update delivers. A report has been filed with Microsoft, this is an excerpt:

My Windows system is a fairly powerful Threadripper 16core 2950X with 128 G of memory. It is connected via 10GbE ethernet to a very powerful Threadripper 32 core 3970x with 256 G of memory. That machine is an Ubuntu server. Every night, it runs an incremental backup of the Windows machine, and it does so via the network. The speed of the operation sometimes was better that disk-to-disk local copies.

Recently, the copy speed dropped a lot. It was time to break out iperf3. Iperf3 measures the raw network speed achieved between two machines. It is NOT influenced by any harddrives etc. In the following, I will only cite iperf3 numbers measured with the Ubuntu machine as the client, and the Windows machine as the host, and I will cite the average of four runs, as measurements can vary.

To my consternation, the measured iperf3 speed was down to some 500 Megabits per second, thats 5% of the theoretical 10 Gigabit/second speed. I hit Google, and followed all the recipes (jumbo frames, bigger buffers etc.) It made only very marginal difference. I bit the bullet and did a completely clean install of Windows 10, which earned me Windows 10 Pro, Version 2004, OS build 19041.610 with Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.31.0. It also brought some speed increase, iperf3 now was at 1.78 Gbit/second. Still not good enough.

To eliminate any outside factors, I put the two machines on their own private network, with only the Ubuntu and the Windows machine on it, connected directly with 2 feet of Cat8 cable to forestall any possible slowdown caused by the wiring, or the switch.

To rule out any hardware problems, I tried two different NICs on the Widows machine, one an Asus/Aquantia XG-C100C, and the other an Intel X540-T2, both in a x8 slot of the Windows machine. No appreciable difference. To furthermore rule out any hardware issues, I ran the test between the Ubuntu machine and with Windows switched for Ubuntu on the 16core Threadripper. That gave me a whopping 9.41 Gbit/second speed, very close to the 10 Gbit theoretical line speed. So it must be something in Windows.

Trying to find what it is, I started Windows in Safe Mode. Iperf3 speed still was in the 1.7 1.8 Gbit/s range. I shut down service after service with no appreciable change. Only shutting down Zonealarms TrueVector service brought a slight improvement, 2.45 Gbit/sec average of four runs with all services turned off that could be turned off. No other virus checker. No Defender. Is this the best a virgin and stripped down Windows can do? Apparently, yes. Well, not really.
I started the Windows machine with an older Windows version I keep on an SSD for emergencies. That one, a Windows 10 Pro, Ver 1909 build 18363.1139 delivered 6.14 Gigabit/second over 4 iperf3 runs. Still not as fast as Ubuntu-2-Ubuntu, but drastically better than what I get with a brand-new, clean installed Windows.

Whats going on? I have done everything to isolate the problem. Hardware is fine. An older Windows version delivers O.K. results. The latest Windows version delivers atrocious speeds, even after a completely clean install, and even with everything turned off.

When discussing this issue, please lets no waste our time with mentions of harddrive speeds (not an issue) or any driver settings (been there, done that.) There is something in the latest Windows version that brings a 10Gbit line down to its knees, and Id love to know what it is.

    :)

Windows 10 upgrade problem, no input accepted

I really hate having to come here and ask for help, but I really am stumped. It hurts my geek pride. I have a PC with fairly modern hardware in it. It has a p8p67 pro in it. I have tried upgrading windows 10 on it twice now. Both times I have had the same result.

After windows finishes upgrading it goes to the log in/set up screen. I can't do anything. No keyboard or mouse input is accepted.

I will list some, or hopefully all, of the troubleshooting steps I have tried:
    • Move keyboard and mouse to different USB ports.
    • Try different keyboard or mouse.
    • Restart computer, repeatedly.
    • Google for related issues.
    • Update Bios, because why not.
    • Create boot media and revert to windows 7.
The windows 10 system restore boot media works fine with keyboard and mouse. All USB ports work in windows 7. I don't know what is wrong. I suspect that windows 10 is lacking a driver of some sort, but since the computer accepts no input I have no way of checking for which driver let alone installing it.

Please help me figure this out. If I have to revert back to windows 7 again, I am not going to get it upgraded to windows 10. Thank you in advanced.

Windows 10 upgrade problem, no input accepted

i've seen this when the stock USB drivers went kaput. Only ever seen it once - i used a PCI USB 2.0 card and connected the mouse and keyboard to that, and manually updated the USB 2/USB 3 drivers.
