  1. Lenovo G580 -- 8.0 installation on D: - what happens going to Win 10?

C: occupies most of the hard disk, for the user, D: contain the OS installation files including Lenovo-specific stuff such as control of monitor brightness, speaker volume, mousepad on/off, etc. via use of a special Fn key. User may re-install by special Lenovo-provided one-button system if cannot boot, etc. There are various Lenovo-specific apps, which are not important to me.

I updated to Windows 8.1, but if I re-install it will re-install 8.0 and I'll have to update again. Now with Windows 10, before I do this (MS has not yet sent me the intitiation process) I need to understand what happens with the D: drive and all the Lenovo-specific functionality that would be installed to the C: drive from the D: drive if I use the one-button restore system.

The UEFI in the BIOS prevents any other OS from being installed, and Lenovo does not allow this to be overridden from BIOS settings for Lenovo G580. I assume the UEFI will allow Windows 10, but have not read it specifically. I want to read it specifically before I install Windows 10 and something strange happen.

After I upgrade to Win 10, will this D: drive remain full of 8.0 installation files? Thus, if I initiate the one-button re-install system, will Windows 8.0 re-install thus forcing me to return to MS and go through the upgrade process to Windows 10 again?

    :)

    Lenovo G580 -- 8.0 installation on D: - what happens going to Win 10?

You can delete D: drive (Lenovo tools) if you do not want to use the Lenovo OneKey Recovery and then merge the unallocated space to the C: drive.

I have a Lenovo G580 laptop that came with Windows 8 preinstalled. I have upgraded to Windows 10 and the laptop is working ok. All of the missing drivers will be installed automatically from Windows Update.

How to download and clean install Windows 8.1 if you have an OEM computer with UEFI firmware (BIOS) embedded Windows 8/8.1 product key. -> link

If you perform a clean installation of Windows 8.1/10, you do not need to change the UEFI firmware (BIOS) settings. For example, you do not need to change the boot order of drives, or disable Secure Boot, or enable Legacy BIOS (aka CSM) boot mode.

    - Connect your Windows 8.1/10 USB flash drive or insert your Windows 8.1/10 DVD.
    - Press the Lenovo Novo button when the computer is turned off and then select "Boot Menu".
    - Select your USB/DVD from the boot menu.

  5. Thank you, genet, for some very useful information. I still have a related question:

You wrote, "I have a Lenovo G580 laptop that came with Windows 8 preinstalled. I have upgraded to Windows 10 and the laptop is working ok. All of the missing drivers will be installed automatically from Windows Update." Are you able to toggle the touchpad on/off with Fn+F6? The icon is called EDT Control Center. The ability to switch off my touch pad is vital to me, as with it on I cannot type. The pad is sensitive to the slightest breeze. Even if I blink real hard the cursor jumps to a new position and it ruins my typing.

Does your "Power" function (I have customized the icon to appear in my tray) function? Mine says "60% available (plugged in, charging)" or something like that?

I know about deleting the D: drive, but it would be nice to keep the one-key restore function if that is possible. Do you still have it? Did you delete your D: drive? If not, I assume it still contains installation files -- do you know, if you were to use it would it re-install Windows 8.0?

I noticed in a forum somewhere that users who upgraded Lenovo G580 from Win 8.1 to 10 lost the capacity not only to toggle the mousepad on/off, but even the ability to disable the mousepad by software (nor could they could find it on the OS hardware list). For me, that would be crippling.

The D: drive has folders Application (with only a McAfee subfolder), half a gigabyte, and one for Drivers, two gigs, plus a hidden, R/O folder Lenovo that has a tiny file for one-key restore. The whole drive shows only 2.5 gigabytes, which makes me think they get the reinstall OS via download from Microsoft. The Drivers folder has software for the touchpad but I am not concerned that the touchpad wouldn't work. What I want to be sure about is the capacity to toggle it on and off, which is done with Fn + F6. Lenovo has other proprietary software to do with battery charging control, etc., which I do not know if would be included in "drivers" you mentioned is taken care of with a Windows 10 update.

Finally, do you recommend downloading the OS onto a USB drive or an ISO and installing that way, or just letting Windows update take care of it? I am now being offered the upgrade via "Get Windows 10" which I allowed to be installed.

Thanks a lot for your help!

You can delete D: drive (Lenovo tools) if you do not want to use the Lenovo OneKey Recovery. I deleted my D: drive (Lenovo tools) two years ago.

I updated to Windows 10 and then I did a clean installation of Windows 10. All of the missing drivers will be installed automatically from Windows Update (see screenshot below).
