    Less Updates Please

Whatever the next flavour of Windows will be like please, Microsoft, do something about all the updates. I spend a ton of money on data to keep everything updated and seriously, it needs to be throttled back a bit.

To be honest, its not just MS at fault here. Adobe is another one. Others too. Yes, I know, security bla bla... listen to the consumer and find a better way of dealing with these issues.

A lot of software developers are now no longer releasing a downloadable installer i.e. the software is installed directly from the internet. So when I reinstall all three PC's I have 'download' the same software three times. Adds up. Then if I want to reinstall 6 months later, for whatever reason, I have repeat the entire process as I have no installer from last time. Adobe and Google are two examples of this.

    :)

    Windows 10 missing processor cores.

I am replying to this post because it is the number 1 search result on missing cores, and it might help someone.

My 4 core q66oo was showing up only as 2 cores even after doing ALL of the other tricks, including adding registry entries for core 2 and 3. The instant I loaded "optimized defaults" in the Bios and booted the 4 cores showed up in task manager/performance.
Motherboard: ASRock P43Twins1600. All old, but plenty fast hardware for what I do. I found the answer in a Vista thread.

You need to start using system imaging software so you don't have to go through that pain - its quicker and much easier, and costs you nothing. Have a gander at the free version of Macrium Reflect for that.

Cheers. Someone mentioned that too on Seven Forums. Question is will it work on 3 completely different PC's. I always thought that the PC's would need to be identical...

You make a separate image for each PC.....it doesn't take long at all. Browse the Backup & Tutorial section of SF. Plenty of information there.

It really is a huge time-saver.

+1 for Macrium Reflect. It does a very nice job for me. You can restore to different hardware with the paid version.

  11. Don't really do a lot of images myself but at home i have been happy with Windows Backup to create an Image (as a one time thing).

In our enterprise environment we use WDS (Windows Deployment Services), this allows for different machines, all you need to do is add the drivers to the server and it picks the appropriate ones as required, i believe it's free too (i could be wrong though).

Lazesoft Recovery Suite 3.4 works for me. Been using it for a couple of years now. Also having an SSD as my primary drive it really helps in creating an image in no time. . .*Smile

I make 2 Acronis full backups every weekend. I also make a Paragon Drive Backup image. But I have never restored a Paragon image. Acronis, I have used several times. Two images and validation take about 30-35 minutes with Acronis, and I just go on surfing while they are created.

  14. Ever hear the old saying, "the Devil is in the Details" ???
I've been using the same Backup/Restore program since 1997. It's called simply "Ghost".
It's been updated a few times since then, but I'm still using the last DOS version, that came out about 2005. Amazingly, it works with every version of Windows since '98 and still works today, with version 8.1. My software Guru tells me it also works with Unix.

One of the worse things that often happens is someone makes a backup of their hard drive, but the backup/restore program is ON the hard drive and probably runs in Windows. When that drive totally crashes, both the backup and the restore program just went up in smoke.
So what to do? Well, the backup/restore program must be on some bootable media, like a CD or Bootable Flash Drive. It does you no good at all, to have it on the hard drive that may crash at any time. Several of the better Backup programs will offer to make a Rescue Boot CD for you.

I have my own Ghost program, on CD's, Flash Drives, and even one bootable SD Flash Memory CARD.

My actual backups are saved to an external 1TB hard drive or an internal 1TB hard drive.
Multiple backups in multiple places is just good business.

    Happy Holidays Everyone!

I used Ghost with XP, it did work. However, you had to boot to DOS, and the image creation and validation took about 1 HR 15 Min...Each! All that time you couldn't use the PC for anything else. After I got 7 and got Acronis...what a difference. It was fast, works in windows, and didn't even slow my PC while working. Acronis does create a bootable disc of course. I'd recommend Acronis to anyone.
