    Hello,

From our ISP we have this pretty crappy modem/router combo that, all too often, "breaks" in some way (wifi goes down, internet just dies for 2 seconds, and so on). It often cannot handle the heavier traffic we're doing, and even some standard traffic it should be able to handle can be too much for it. It's kinda random - sometimes it's streaming HD through regular wifi to our TV no problem and the next it's struggling with an online game. We're having talks with our ISP about this but I don't expect our next modem to be any different (we already got another one from them, and it's the same issues).

Now I'm not too network-savvy but I've always had some kind of crappy modem from my ISP, then I would put that in bridge mode or whatever it's called (disable the router function of it), and attach my own, really good and strong router to it. That router then handles all traffic.

I wonder if this is a viable option at all now, or if I should buy a new modem as well? Will the internet disconnects that happen for like 2 seconds no longer happen with this? Assuming my modem is too crap to handle the traffic, will disabling its router function and let an actual good router do the work resolve the issue?

There's gonna be a lot of traffic.

    - A lot of in-network streaming, from pc to TV etc.
    - A lot of internet streaming, where we are the ones streaming (so UP, not just down)
    - Online games, two pc's at the time.

    :)

NotePad end-of-line handling: LF not recognized as EOL

NotePad is the only editor I've ever used that does not recognize LF as an end of line. Is this configurable? If not, is there a good reason for MS to not fix this EOL handling?

If you already have a bad connection, using WiFi is not a good solution. I would suggest getting powerline adaptors which provide fast, stable connection using your house's internal electrical circuit. But this does depend on a few things like the age, size and number of mains rings of your house.

Before powerline I used to run an ethernet cable from downstairs where the modem was to up to my bedroom which was slow and messy. Now I get full speed.

If your going to use a lot of traffic then you want at least gigabit capable adaptors with cat6a cabling.

Just because your ISP leased you a Gateway, does not mean that it is crappy. If you are getting drops and other problems, the next question is who is your ISP, what do your pings to google.com and yahoo.com show, along with trace routes. Also streaming is not a heavy load for a gateway, unless you have a bunch of people trying to overload the connection with many requests from users wanting to play games and stream from various websites.

All that you have in your System Spec's is very basic info. You need to complete all sections for that.

    Hello,

I'm in Finland so I'm not sure that telling you what ISP i have is gonna help you, and honestly I don't even know what they're called (I live in a very small town and I'm not native here, so my friend set me up with the only available ISP in my area). I don't know what more of my system specs you want to know that are gonna be relevant, but for your benefit I added what kind of PSU I have and how much RAM. My internet speeds are 100 down and 10 up so I'm pretty sure we're fine.

Here's the tracert to google's DNS:

    To google.com:

    and to yahoo.com:

I did not lease the modem, I bought it from them for a, by the way, pretty extorbitant price. I know streaming is not heavy load, but since it can have issues with other basic tasks like playing a video game, I'm not willing to risk it.

I basically want to know if the issues I described would be resolved if I would put the modem/router to modem only and add a router to that. I'm already on wired connection, the only things wifi are my phone and TV. I will get a dualband router for the tv no matter what, but i basically want to know if I need to buy a new modem too.

The issue with Ethernet over Power is that it depends on how well maintained the electrical system is and how far of a path that the data has to take, along with line interference, that it could be as slow as dial up. Also Gb adapters and Cat-6 will not make a difference.

I use Cat-5e with the majority of wired connections 100mbps. Only the backhauls to my router down in my basement is 1000mbps. We also have a 2.4/5ghz Wireless-a/b/g/n hotspot that is business grade. It may show the connection at a Gig to the Wifi, but that does not mean that packet loss could happen between the devices and A/P and A/P through the wired connection to the Gateway to the U-Verse Gateway to where I want to go.

The OP has a lot of homework to do in letting us know the ISP, their speeds and the Gateway that they are leased.

Luulane, you do not show having any problems with the Google trace. That one at 43ms is normal. All of those lower pings looks like you are only hitting the router in your home not the actual server. Otherwise from anyone, it looks like you are using a Fiber Connection and have no traffic jam or bad hops that have to re-route around problem areas.
