Windows 10: Licence not recognised

Hi I have bought a second hand pc. It originally had windows 8.1 on it and the previous owner upgraded to windows 10. I tried resetting but I encountered problems and ended up formatting the hdd. I installed windows 10 but I was forced to create a Microsoft account then windows activated itself and allocated the digital licence with my microsoft account. My problem is that I want to give this computer to an extended family member and was prepared to use the same windows 10 key that was on it when I bought it I wrote it down before formatting the drive. When I am trying to change the key to the previous one I get an error message: The product key that you entered didnt work. Check the product key and try again or enter a different one. 0x80041023. I dont want to give up my microsoft account when giving away the pc to the family member. What are my options? I am pretty sure that before formatting the pc had a normal licence not a digital one. I dont understand why the previous key isnt recognised. I would appreciate any help. Thank you. Marta

ssd not recognised


After update to Windows 10 Anniversary Update I now am getting same problem.

SSD's not recognised. I tried running "winsat formal" from an elevated (admin) command as suggested by Word Man and done previously when I got this problem with no success.

Any suggestions?

Step 1 App Troubleshooter

After trying to run the app, get message:

• “Windows Sore cache and licences may be corrupt. Resetting Windows Store will resolve cache and licence issues. Would you like to reset now?”

Responded yes to reset

• Message Windows Store Cache may be damaged..............not fixed”

Tried powering off and on, but same symptom.

Any further suggestions?

activating win10 licence on a different computer

Hi Chris

Because you have a full retail licence then you can transfer that licence to a new PC

Before you sell that laptop, here are the steps to remove your Windows 10 licence form that laptop

Click your Start Button, then just type cmd

From the resulting list, right click Command Prompt and choose 'Run as Administrator'

Paste this into Command Prompt and press Enter

slmgr.vbs /upk

When that command completes, close Command Prompt

That's It, that will remove your Windows 10 licence form that laptop . .
