  1. Linx 820 clean install woes

I received a tablet with a borked Win10 Installation so I thought “no biggie, I’ll just clean install”

Background: the tablet has only one micro USB port (also used for charging) plus a MicroSD card slot.

    • When writing the image on a USB stick / MicroSD card using either the Windows USB/DVD Download Tool or the Windows Media Creation Tool, the media does not get recognised by the tablet at all

    • Using Rufus tool and setting GPT Partitioning Scheme and UEFI Target System, the tablet can boot from either USB stick or MicroSD

    • When using the image downloaded from Microsoft, the touch screen does not work

    • When using the Microsoft image through MicroSD, the USB port does not work, so can’t add a keyboard that way

    • When using the image provided by the manufacturer, the screen works but the installation fails after the scripted partitioning process, when the image is applied to the drive.

I suspect there is an error somewhere in the image but it’s a bit beyond my ability to identify. It kinda looks like it’s calling bcdboot / reagentc before they’re actually copied over?

I’ve looked through the BIOS and secure boot is off, there seems to be no legacy boot option or a way to enable USB drive mode , so I’m stumped.

    Any ideas how to proceed?

  2. Clean Install Workaround for Vista

You may remember this news story on techPowerUp! a couple of days ago relating to the lack of clean installs when using the Upgrade Editions of Vista, which required an old OS to be installed. However, Paul Thurrott has managed to find a workaround for this issue, which ironically lets users do a clean install Vista without any previous version of Windows, albeit a little tedious. Here are the steps:
    • Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD as normal
    • When prompted for a product code, leave this blank
    • Select the version of Vista you have purchased and let Vista install
    • When you boot to your desktop for the first time, run the Vista setup from Windows
    • This time enter your product key
    • When asked whether you want to do an Upgrade of Custom install, select custom and choose a clean install
    • Windows will now install for a second time and you should be able to activate it
Remember, these steps are only advised for use in order to achieve a clean install of Vista, it is only legal to use the upgrade editions if you have previously purchased the appropriate version of Windows.

    Linx Laptop

It's not LINUX but Linx, nothing to do with Chromebook either and comes with W10 Home. Judging by Linx 14US
looks like decent lightweight hardware and should be quite enough for everyday use. It has only 64GD drive and I'd suggest you ad some more storage space in form of an Micro SDHC / XC memory card.

Windows 10 infinite restart black screen

The tutorials provided are just a list of troubleshooting steps. Use only the steps which apply to you.

Since none of the troubleshooting steps here worked, I'd suggest you do a Clean install.
