Windows 10: little icon next to files on desktop changing from "shortcut icon" to "file share icon"...

as the title says,the little icons next to files on desktop changing from "shortcut icon" to "file share icon" then even changed to a picture I have saved on my desktop?ThanksEmma

I know I am quite late but as I was scrolling through I saw this post which happened to one of friend too. This sometimes happens with Windows. Usually a reboot will solve the problem. However if this doesn't, try setting the icon for the shortcut(right-click pinned icon, right-click program, left-click properties, select "change icon...") or refreshing it by switching to a different icon, applying it, and then reverting back to the original icon. Remove the shortcut from the taskbar and replace it with the start menu shortcut or simply drag the .exe file to the taskbar.

Looks like this whole icon thing was some kind of explorer.exe bug ,the icon changed to a Diablo 3 icon , after another reboot, it changed back to the windows media "play" icon.

Nevermind ... I remember this bug elsewhere in another situation, happens sometimes when a lot of icons get randomly choosen instead of the correct one.

FIX: because of the permissions inherition when I had the files on my desktop this icon bug happen, when i moved them to the public D: drive, the permissions changed and the problem was fixed.

Win7 always has something to confuse the heck out of you.

Not sure what to call it to even search for it.

If i make small tiles, the icon changes to a "setup" kind of one you see in .msi extensions.


I have been cleaning PC of slack and moving files around, I have been also trying to decode these Fraps movies, i use TeraCopy, i remember i moved 20 fraps files from C: to D: in another folder for fraps movies, i've made up my mind in the middle and skipped ... i thought the files would be intact, seems they are, but this icon appeared after that.

But i have no idea why these icons appear in files that were generated in encoded files, by VidEncoder.

Feels like it's some symbolic link or network icon, i do have hardlink extension installed but no idea what is going on here.


I also have FileMenuTools installed, but i still didn't use it this session. Also i've checked folders and files for sharing and permissions and no it's not shared either, wtf...
