    local account/Microsoft account

I have been using Windows 10 for about a week. I set up two accounts - one administrator, the other regular user. When attempting to update Windows 10, I got a message saying because I did not login a Microsoft account, some updates couldn't be downloaded. So, I had to create a Microsoft account. At the end of creating the account, there was a message saying from then on, I would login the Microsoft account. That is not what I want. I want to use the administrator and user accounts on daily basis and only use the Microsoft account when downloading updates.

    My questions are:

    1. can I get updates without login a Microsoft account?
    2. If not, can I login the existing administrator and user accounts on daily basis and only login the Microsoft account to get updates?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    :)

  3. Windows 10 Local Account

I am logged into my Microsoft account and I want to log into the current I have used for years. When I followed instructions, it wants me to create a new instead of just adding the current one. How do I add the current one that
has all of my settings already established on my computer?

    Thanks.

You do not need a Microsoft account to get Windows updates.

Thank you for the quick reply.

The following is what was shown on my update screen. What account was Windows talking about? Obviously, I must have logged in a account (the default Administrator account, in this case) to see the message.

    WINDOWS UPDATE
We couldn't download some updates because you were signed out of your account. Sign in with your account, try the update again, and stay signed in during the download.
    Retry

  7. Do you have the box checked off for receiving updates for other MS products in the advanced options? If an MS account is required for some other MS product or you enabled the "Get insider builds" option which requires and MS account then that would explain seeing that type of message.

Having multiple accounts here one for each machine as well as for use with VMs I ended creating a new admin account in order to nuke another when it couldn't be renamed from the MS account email address to a basic user named account. That also scrubbed a second signin item on the lock screen that had appeared as a phantom allowing for automatically signing into the intended admin account.

Thanks for the replies. I clicked on the Retry button and it started to download updates.

I had done that before posting the original article. It did not work at that time. After posting the article, I searched the web and found that I needed to delete all files in C:\windows\softwaredistribution\download. I did that then clicked on the Retry button and things started working again.

  9. Apparently you had some buildup to clean up there then! At least you are now seeing things coming in normally at least.
