Windows 10: Location is not available

Hi,


I have a Surface Book 2 which upon power on come up with "Preparing Windows" as if's used for the first time (which is not the case as it has been working for months with no issues).


Once it get to the "desktop", the error "C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable" comes up first and the followed by "SurfaceDTX.exe - Application Error".


The Desktop background is black, I can't access anything (start menu, file explorer, settings etc. Anything really). If I connect an external keyboard, I can open "Run" by using "Windows Key + R" and open CMD only. Nothing else opens. Even from CMD I cannot force it to open any folders, settings etc. and most basic commands fail when trying.


I wanted to try do a full "reset" of the laptop, but as I cannot open Settings or anything else, I cannot do this that way. I can't even get into "Boot Mode/Recovery Mode/Safe Mode" and so on upon powering up the laptop, so receovery through that is not an option either.


I have from "Run" managed to open a "File Explorer" but the folder path mentioned in the original error message is there and all looks like it does on a working laptop of same brand and model. So I don't want to start playing around with the folder structure too much as it is an exact match to a working laptop.


To do a reset, I through CMD tried this command "systemreset -cleanpc" which initialize, but then just stalls at 1%. And this is constant.


Does anyone have any idea what I can try and do to solve this laptop so it starts working again? I can get a Windows 10 image on to a USB stick, but as I can't access "Boot Mode" at all upon startup, I can't access that install file.


Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Quick Access - "Location is not available"

Have just done Windows 10 update from 8.1 - very smooth well done MS!

Have encountered one small problem. In Windows Explorer have discovered "Quick Access" list. Clicking on one folder gives pop-up box "Location is not available" . Displays path which does not exist plus some suggestions as to what might have happened. If
I right click on folder in list and select "Remove from Quick Access" nothing happens.

How do I get rid of this folder from the list?

Sorry for the inconvenience caused for you, I suggest you to try the below troubleshooting steps and check If it helps.

Step 1: Steps to turn on the Location settings.

• Login as an administrator.
• Press Windows key, type Location settings and select
  Change location settings.
• Check whether Location for this device is On by clicking on
  Change.
• Also turn on Location as well.

Step 2: And as you are unable to set the service Geolocation service to automatic, I suggest you to run SFC scan and check.

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

Follow the below steps:

• 
  Right click on the Start button, click on
  Command Prompt (Admin).
  
• 
  Type “sfc /scannow” without the quotes and hit
  Enter.
  
• 
  After the scan, restart the computer and check for the issue.
  

Try to set the service to automatic by following the steps provided in the above post by Praveen Venugopal.
