Windows 10: Log in password question

My desktop PC is used only by wife and myself. I have always used a password to log in.

My logic is if our PC is stolen at least the thief won't be able to log on easily.

Am I really achieving anything?

I guess my question is; Do I really need to have a password to log on? Or can I skip this?

How to reset Win 10 login Password

Whoever it was that tried to answer this question didn't understand the question. They told how to reset the microsoft log-in password. The problem was not with the login password, but rather the Winddows 10 password on the local PC. I have not seen
an answer to this question.

Sorry, I don't understand your question. Windows doesn't come with a password; *you* supply a password for yourself to log into Windows. The strength of it depends on your choice.

 

A Password is not only in case your computer is stolen, it is if you leave it unattended and someone walks in the room and decides to open your computer and go thru your personal files. Maybe you're an open book and have nothing to hide from your family and friends or strangers, or maybe you just don't want people snooping in on you.

 

Also consider Malware - malware gets onto system, and reboots to fully install it's keyloggers and other nasty stuff -

• without password everything you do is now sent off to Mr scum the malware man
• With password the system stops at the login screen waiting or password entry (ok you may still just come to the system and enter the password without thinking why it's rebooted but Being a more cautious type that askes before making changes *Wink you would probably check things, and Mr Scum would get nothing *chuckle

 

I was always surprised at the people who complain about having to type in a password to log in to their computer. Given the security reasons, is it really a problem? How often are you logging in and out that it feels like an issue?

Password only protection will help to keep automated, unattended virus installations from happening and limit what the programs can do. Password only protection will also keep honest people honest, such as invited guests from getting onto your computer.

Unless you put password protection in bios or UEFI where the user has to enter the password to even start the post process, though, it does nothing to secure your computer and the locally stored files against someone who wants to access it by simply booting it from a USB flash drive or DVD. You need encryption (or a locked bios/UEFI) for that.
