Windows 10: Login scripts and drive mapping vs UNC shortcuts

Hello all.I currently work in a group that supports 50k plus users and is likely to grow in the next year or so. We primarily run Windows 10 and are preparing to migrate over to Windows 11. We have Azure in the environment but haven't implemented it fully. We use the storage management aspects mainly.We currently have a mix of batch files, vbs scripts and who knows what else. There hasn't been dedicated to making a uniform approach and implementing it since 2008 and I recently assumed that role.We have a couple issues that have appeared with the mass work from home activity. For File Explorer, how to get UNC pathname of folder in mapped Drive ?

Thanks, this is another workaround.

If File Explorer can show the UNC Path, end-user only need to copy the address bar instead of

1. requiring CMD skill and memory for the command
   
2. additional four steps to get UNC pathname of a file.
   
   1. open CMD
      
   2. type in net use
      
   3. copy Remote text
      
   4. add subfolder to Remote Text
      

Your suggestion is very useful in general but for my case need more labour than the one I posted with help from

Is it possible to minimize steps with your CMD option?

for example, open CMD in the subfolder instead and then type in some command to get UNC path of the subfolder?

There is a paid solution but I need approval from IT; which is unlikely because this is not commonly required except for communicating to Tech Support

UNC vs Mapped Drive

Hi,

The organization I work for use windows services to run our service modules.

While investigating and auditing our configuration, we've found that

we are getting permission issue from using UNC and Mapped drive.

Bottom line is;

UNC has no issue.

However, issue arises if I set up a mapped drive (shared drive) and use it.

Brief detail of the current set up;

1. Two servers(Server A, Server B) , 1 DB server + File server

2. Both server A,B talks to same DB, same File server
3. File server is set up as a shared drive ( mapped drive )

4. All Windows services have domain user (log on as)

Issue:

If I use mapped drive for the main folder, which both server A and B use, I get permission error.

the log shows that the sub folders in the main shared folder can't be accessed somehow.

If I stop using Mapped drive and use UNC, then everything works fine.

I researched about unc vs mapped drive but I couldn't find anything solid.

I'd be much appreciated If you provide some comments regarding above matter.

For File Explorer, how to click on Address Bar to get UNC path of folder in Mapped Drive? As-Is, it only shows the path starting with Drive Name.

My best workaround is to right click a file in this folder into a Word Document; Is there a shortcut?
