Looking for a way to disable the auto updates but still have the option to update at will

I know that disabling the auto updates is a fairly common question, but all of the suggestions I've found online involved messing with the registry to the point of breaking the updater completely.

I'm actually more interested in keeping everything as is, because I do want to update my machine, but I also want to CHOOSE WHEN it happens. I swear it feels like everytime I leave my laptop, even for a short time, I'd return to see the Windows lock screen and see that all of my work was closed (or more infuriating, when I need to do something ASAP - and as I turn the laptop on it tells me that I have to wait for it to install the crap I didn't want it to install in the first place, holy shit, I don't feel like I own this laptop)

I'm looking for a way to increase the number of days that it lets you to pause the auto-update, which tops at like 30-something days.

By increase I mean - to infinity.

    Anyone knows if that's possible?

Microsoft Auto-Updates Components of Windows Without User Permission

The nine files that are updated all have to do with the Auto-Updater itself.
The article lists them all. No big deal.

I run auto-update anyway, so BRING ON THE NEW UPDATES !!!
I have yet to experience any problems from MS updates on my XP network.

Ditto. I specifically disable auto-updates after they have been installed on a clean XP install, then I also disable the service for auto updates, not just disable it in automatic updates. I'd go apeshit if I found MS was "secretly" making changes to MY system without my knowledge.

Is there a way to disable auto-update driver for one device?

My wireless network device can't work after windows auto update the driver.

Whenever windows update, I have to manually downdate this device to a lower version to get it work normally.

Is there a way to disable auto-update driver for wireless network device?
