Windows 10: Lose cursor-mouse and keyboard function when keyboard battery runs low

I have a Microsoft Wireless Comfort Keyboard 5050 and mouse. When the battery in the keyboard gets low, the cursor disappears, and the keyboard function is lost. After changing the battery in the keyboard, the keyboard and mouse function is not restored until after I restart my computer. I can only restore the keyboard function and cursor / mouse by turning the computer off by holding the start button and restarting the computer. However, since not being able to navigate using the mouse / cursor, anything I was working on at the time is lost. I have tried pressing different keys on the keyboa

Intermittent keyboard non-functioning


I use a wireless mouse and keyboard. Every now and then, often enough to be irritating, the keyboard fails to function: the mouse works properly. The keyboard problem persists for a few minutes, after which it works again. There is no discernable pattern to this problem.

This is the third wireless keyboard to show the same problem, suggesting something is wrong elsewhere.

The keyboard batteries are not responsible for the failure.

On the same desk is a cordless telephone.

Any helpful suggestions would be very gratefully received.
